If you've watched much of the
Gamecock basketball team this
season, you probably noticed the
players wearing numbers 24 and
21.
Those digits mark the shirts of
Carolina's two freshman recruits
this year ? Kevin Darmody and
Derrick Scott.
Both from out of state, Darmody
and Scott expect to see a lot of
action this season. According to
Scott, "coach (Frank McGuire)
told me I would be playing a lot
because we'll be running a lot. I
don't think there's anyone in
colleee basketball who can run the
press for a full forty minutes so
that means we're going to have a
lot of different players on the
court," he said.
WHEN HE COMES off the
Gamecock bench, Scott's main
role will be at point guard. The
team will play more of a running
game this year, and Scott feels it
will be a beneficial form of offense.
"We can run under control," he
said. "We have a lot of quick plays
and if we can run the ball upcourt
and not give the other team's
defense a chance to set up, that

Darmody agrees that the new
offense is good for the team
because they have the speed to
execute it right. "I love the new
offense. I'm glad we're doing the
running game off the fast break,"
he said. "It should definitely work
for several reasons. You've got
Zam Fredrick out there on the
break and he's awful quick. Plus
you've got Kevin Dunleavy who's a
very quick guard and gets the ball
upcourt fast."

schools as Notre Dame and
Virginia. While the main reason
for his choice was McGuire,
Darmody also wanted to see some
action on the court.
"I was hoping I'd get some
playing time down here right away
as a freshman, where as at other
schools I might not have. For instance
at Notre Dame I probably
would have sat on the bench a lot,"
he said. "Coach McGuire was

my decision though."
SCOTT'S MAIN reason for attending
Carolina was also
McGuire. Despite offers to
Southern California and San Diego
State among others, Scott headed
south because, in his own words,
"The facilities were great and I
wanted to play for coach McGuire.
* "When I came in here, I had a lot
of street game in me and coach
taught me how to define my better
.points like dribbling and passing;
dp the things 1 could do best and try
to improve them as much as I
can," he added.

coaching and the more physical
aspect of college ball have comSwimmers

' ONE OF CRAMER'S dreams is
to go back to the Virgin Islands and
organize the sports program there.
"No one really cares back home,"
she said. "When we went to the 75
Pan Am games our basketball
players didn't even have sneakers.
Before Montreal we didn't even
know if we'd get to go because the
government wouldn't give us any
money. I'd really like to be the
athletic director of the whole
program and get it organized."

bined to improve his game.
"I've become more of an
aggressive type of ball player than
1 was in high school. I'm going in
and getting the rebounds a lot
more," he said. "And there's more
nhvsioal nlavers out here on the

court than there ever was in high
school."
The 6-7 forward added that the
attitude of the other players has
also been conducive to his improvement
as a player. "They'll
work with you and help you. We're
all a team and we do things
together. We proved that when we
said we'd quit if they fired coach
McGuire."
ASIDE FROM the closeness of
the team, Darmody is impressed
with its talent. He believes they
nave uie increments necessary 10
produce at least a 20-win season.
"The team has so much talent
that we could easily win 20 games,
no problem," Darmody said.
"That's how talented we are, plus
we have the experience with seven
seniors. Those are the two things
you need; talent and experience,
and we've already got the
coaching."
Near the beginning of the
semester, the incidents involving
McGuire and the board of trustees
made Scott think twice about
staying with the Gamecocks. After
going home to think over the
situation, Scott decided the best
thing for him to do was return to
use.
From Flushing, N.Y., Scott got
his start in basketball from several
members of his family. "My father
played basketball and so did my
mother," he said. "They really
influenced me a lot and my cousin
got me started in it.
"At that time I was in junior high
school and I was playing ball in the
parks. He got me into a CYO
(Catholic Youth Organization)
tournament and from there I went
to a Catholic high school. That's
really where my life began as far
as playing basketball."
WHILE HIS family has offered
constant encouragement, Darmody's
father is the one who
started him in basketball and
influenced him most throughout
high school.

"When I was in high school he
never missed a same After everv
game he'd criticize me; tell me if I
had a good game, if I did terrible,
and what I did wrong. I think that's
what helped me the most," Darmody
said.
Adding their different
backgrounds and different styles
of basketball to the team, Darmody
and Scott should play a big
part in the Gamecock's new
season.
