E5HBB Basket By Willie T. Smith III Gamccock Staff Writer A last second shot by Gamecock forward Cedrick Hordges gave USC a thrilling 79-78 victory over the South Carolina State Bulldogs before an excited Carolina Coliseum crowd of 9,861 Monday night. The lead shifted back and forth the entire way. Neither team could build or hold a lead. One of the biggest factors for the v Gamecocks was the strong performance of Kenny Reynolds at point guard. Reynolds ran the offense enthusiastically with several clutch shots and passes down the stretch. "I'm just glad I showed my coaches I can do something to help this team. I'm glad they had enough confidence in me to put me in such a tough situation," Reynolds said. ANOTHER PLAYER which led the Gamecock effort was backup center Jim Graziano. "I like taking the ball to the basket. Coach McGuire has more faith in me now. I m really enjoying what I m doing for the team now," Graziano said. "I like having my back to the basket. I have a good first step and now I'm dying to go to the basket when I get in there." The largest lead anyone had was with 4:15 left in the first half when the Gamecocks had a 33-26 lead. S.C. State fought back and tied the score at 39 on a lay up by Arthur Snipes with. 1:27 left in the half. After misses by both clubs the half ended tied. The next time down the court Reynolds threw up a 20 foot jumper when everyone else was covered to tie up the game. Ail-American candidate Cedrick Hordges, whose shooting had been off for most of the game, hit several key shots in the clutch to keep the Gamecocks in the game. "They were double teaming me all nigh* and I took a lot of dumb shots," Hordges said. "It was close all the way and I knew I'd have to start asserting myself if we were going to have a chance to win." WITH A LITTLE over a minute to play and Carolina holding a 77-76 lead State decided to hold the ball for one shot against the Carolina end zone. With eight seconds left, Marty Lane hit a shot from the left corner to give State the lead at 7877. Carolina quicklv called time-out with two seconds left. When play resumed Gamecock captain Mike Doyle took the ball out of bounds under the State basket. He heaved it up the court toward Cedrick Hordges. Hordges fumbled the ball, picked it up and fired a 25 footer that swished through the nets to give the Gamecocks the 7978 win. "They had three men on me, but I just went up and got it," Hordges said. At that point the ball was still on the floor. Then I heard the buzzer and he still hadn't gotten the ball off," junior forward Bryan Grice said. "I still can't believe it." "They know what the deal was," sophomore guard Joe Robinson said. "Deep down in their hearts they know we won. I'm not mad because I'll always know we won." "All I can say is that it was a long two seconds," head coach Tim Autry said. "But I don't want to dwell on that. Our kids did a great job. I also want to congratulate South Carolina. Cedrick Hordges is a whale of a ball player." llORDGES AGAIN led the way in the statistics for the Gamecocks, with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Mike Doyle and Jim Graziano toiiowea with 12. Kenny Reynolds and Zam Fredrick rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 and 10 respectively. "It's time we got lucky," Coach Frank McGuire said. "Doyle threw the ball well and Hordges is a good outside shooter, but we were still lucky." McGuire also praised the play of guard Kenny Reynolds. "Reynolds played well. He's excellent under pressure. He also has a good jump shot. He killed them tonight. He's a smart ballplayer." Senior forward Cedrick Hordges echoed his coach's praise of Reynolds.
