Thomas Wimbush is what you
might classify the strong silent
type. He lets his actions do his
talking for him, and right now they
are telling his opponents to watch
out.
People who haven't seen
Wimbush play since last season
are in for a real treat, according to
head coach Frank McGuire.
"Wimbush has worked really hard
on his game this summer. In fact,
he has probably worked harder
than anyone," McGuire said.
One of the major weaknesses
Wimbush has had in the past is his
shooting, but he feels this might
not be a problem any more. "I
worked reallv hard on mv shooting
over the summer. Brian Winters
worked with me a lot. I think I
made my biggest improvement in
that area," Wimbush said.
Coach Frank McGuire agreed
saying, "Last year Tommy wasn't
much of an outside shooting threat,
Now I don't think people will be
able to lay off him. This should be a
tremendous help to Cedrick
Hordges."
Wimbush seems to have made a
great impression on McGuire.
"Right now I would say only
Cedrick and Tommy have earned
starting positions. Everything else
is up for grabs," he said.
Wimbush said he doesn't think
he has any real stong points or any
major weaknesses. "I guess if I
had to say something, offensive
rebounding would be my strength.
Also my quickness is an asset. I
guess my major weakness is my foot
movement. Sometimes I get
lackidaisical when we are in the
zone."
Coach Frank McGuire added
that one of Wimbush's major
assets is his attitude*. "He has the
best attitude on the team. He never
says a word. He just comes to
practice and gives 110 percent
everyday.
Wimbush's main role with the team
will be to play the strong side
forward, according to McGuire.
"We mainly want him to hit the
offensive boards real hard."
Wimbush thinks he will probably
draw the tougher defensive
assignments as well. "I think my
main responsibility will be to play
the quick forward," Wimbush said.
"I'll have to get out fast on the
break and be a rebounder. I also
consider myself a good defensive
player. In fact, I consider myself
the best defensive player on the
team. I was second to Strick in
blocked shots last year."
Wimbush seems enthusiastic
about the coming season. "I think
we well be much stronger this
year. We have all played together
for a year. Last year 1 didn't feel
relaxed on the court, but after a
year playing with all the guys, I
hoped to be more at home."
Wimbush said the team has set
some pretty lofty goals for this
year. 44We set our goals at winning
22-24 games and getting an NCAA
bid. I know people are going to
laugh, but we also plan on winning
the NCAA title. We have good
leadership with seven seniors and I
think we can do it," Wimbush said.
As far as personal goals go
Wimbush said he would like to
continue nlavinff hntikothnll nn the
professional level. "I would like to
play in the NBA and if that doesn't
pan out, maybe I'll get to play
overseas.. I also hope all the other -

I also considered Kentucky

Wimbush played one year of higl
school basketball with Cedricl
Hordges. Cedrick and I were rea
good friends. Him being here als<
influenced my decision," Wimbusl
said.
No one knows for sure what kinc
of season the Gamecocks will havt
this year, but if the rest of the tearr
has Wimbush's confidence anc
desire they could go far but as
Wimbush says, "Anyone can talk
you have to go out on the court anc
let your actions speak for you.'
