A crowd of more than 150 people
gathered in front of the Columbia
Mall Cinema Monday night to
protest the cancellation of Monty
Python's "The Life of Brian."
The story, by Britain's foremost
comedy troupe, revolves around
Brian being confused with Jesus
Christ as the "Messiah."
A petition was passed around at
the Columbia Mall as the crowd
chanted 44We want Brian" and
sang 44My Country 'Tis of Thee."
The petition concluded, "As
Americans, we want to protest and

our constitutional rights."
THE MOVIE WAS suspended
after Rev. William Solomon called
Sen. Strom Thurmond's wife, and
she relayed the complaint to Sen.
Thurmond. Phyllis Gault,
assistant press secretary to
Thurmond, said the senator called
the distributors of the movie

yesterday, and according to Jim
Navey, manager of the Columbia
Mall Cinema, "the film has been
cancelled at this location, and isf
now in the hands of Warner
Brothers who will decide what to,
do with it."
Solomon said he did not see the!
movie, but listened to the soundtrack
and "it was personally offensive"
to him.
ONE OF THE PROTESTORS,
Hal French, USC religious studies
student, quoted from George
Bernard Shaw and said it was only
a movie,and "they've made it an
issue of public morality."
Rev. Phil Spencer said, "I have
confidence in an adult to see what
he wants to see. My purpose in
getting involved was educational."
He said he never did want to see
the movie closed.

"As far as I'm concerned, I'd
rather have the movie showing.
But I don't think it's worth $3."
One of the pro-suspension
protestors, Richard Gant,
Presbyterian youth minister, said,
"We were not trying to get the
movie banned originally. All we
were trying to do was to educate r

censor a man's right to find his
hell. We were here praying and
hoping they would know the difference."
THE DISTRIBUTORS had no
desire to show the movie if people
were objecting to it, according to

Spencer said. "It was just a
request on the part of Sen. Thurmond.
The same guy that would've
like to have seen it should call
Thurmond. These guys are gonna
move on a political basis."
Gant handed out leaflets saying,
"Brian is not Jesus of Nazareth."
In the paper, Biblical scriptures
are listed such as John 3:16, explaining,
"For God so loved the
world that he gave His only
begotten son, that whosoever shall
believe in Him shall not perish but
have everlasting life."
The page explained that "when]
Brian died, he will sit in the grave'
