Beware! Root Boy Slim and the
bex Change Band, with the
Rootettes, are coming to USC.
This crazy, gross, rock 'n' roll
band from the Washington, D.C.
area might do strange things to
your sanity. The leader of this offthe-wall
band, Root Boy Slim, was
raised in D C and is a graduate of
Yale (believe it or not). He is listed
as contributing vocals, harmonica,
and special defecks. His band

consists of: E. Sex-Ray Lancaster,
guitar: Rattlesnake Rattles, bass;
W. Lounge Lizard Kelly IV, Esq.,
keyboards; and Kung Fu "Albert"
Bashor, drums; The Jones Boys
Horns (Ron Holloway and Marshall
Keys); and the Rootettes,
Krash Kaka and Cherie Anita
Fixx.
Root Boy can often be seen
wearing huge pairs of glasses
saying 'Root' or 'Stoned' on his
face. He is gross, funny and
definitely unlike any other performer
traveling the alleyways in
America.
Gary Katz (of Steeley Dan
fame), producer of Root Boy's first
album, has said, "When I first
listened to his music, I thought it
was the worst thing I had ever
heard. I couldn't even get halfway
through the first song, 'Boogie 'Til
You Puke.' I couldn't listen to the

Some other favorite Root Boy
songs are: "You Can't Beat
Death," "My Wig Fell Off,"
"Heartbreak of Psoriasis," "Sex
with a Capital X" and "Christmas
at K-Mart."
A DJ at WHFS-FM named Josh

Root Boy on his first

said, This guy's a genius. Sign him

In the Aug. 25, 1975 edition of

nice at all."?Paul Dunoyer.
Root Boy has also made his antinuke
statement is a song called
"Do the Meltdown," which is
obviously influenced by the Three
Mile Island accident. He also made
an appearance in a production
known as Mr Mikf?\?; MnnHn
for Saturday Night Live, which
was banned from the air. I wonder
why?
Contemporary Sounds can be
thanked for bringing USC yet
another unique musical experience.

crew will put you in the proper

Considering the facts the
producer-director Mark Robso
died during filming and that sta
Robert Shaw died before con
pleting the soundtrack, it'
amazing that Avalanche Expres
ever made it to the screen.
It's taken more than a year fo
the picture to do so and evidently

was done on it, for the film is ver
impressive technically. Th
special effects during th
avalanche scene ? which, by th
way, comes fairly early in the fill
? are especially noteworthy. If th
end credits did not mention th<
Apogee did the miniatures, I wou)
have been hard nresspd to te
whether or not miniatures wer
indeed used in the movie.
The photography, by Jac
Cardiff, is also nice, though a fe
shots are a bit underexposed,
only its plot had been worked 01
as thoroughly as its productic
values, Avalanche Express coul
have been a truly excellent motic
picture.
Abraham Polonsky's scrip
based on the novel by Colin Forbe
is riddled with cliched dialogt
and doesn't manage to meld any <
the film's rather disjointed pl<
angles into an engrossing whole.
Most of the angles concern th
defection of a high-ranking Sovi<
official, Marenkov (Shaw), and th
subsequent attempts by Russia
agents (led by Maximillian Schel
to kill him before he spills th
beans about Russia's top secrets l
officials in Washington.
Assigned to protect Marenkc
are a handful of American agen
(played by Lee Marvin, Line
Evans, Mike Connors and J<
Namath) who decide that, instez
of putting the Russian on an ai
plane and getting him out
danger quickly, they'll put him <
the Atlantic Express and let hi
draw out Russian deep cov<
agents across Europe.
The final two-thirds of the fil:
exposes the lengths to which tho:

It's unfortunate that a film so

missed.
