If students have drinking
problems or are concerned about
friends with drinking problems,
they may contact Mimi Parrott,
director of the USC Campus
Alcohol Project.
The purpose of the project is
educational and informational.
The underlying assumption is that
alcohol itself is neither good nor

character.
"A lot of people make decisions
about drinking based on very bad
information," Parrott said. "For
example, most people assume a
beer is safer than a mixed drink,
but they have the same alcoholic
content. Beer is a potent drug."
IT IS GENERALLY agreed that
people have an alcohol problem
when they get to the point "at
which some major area of life is
being interfered with," such as a
student's social life, school, job,
health, finances or trouble with the
law.
Students who come to Parrott
"identify common symptoms of an
alcohol problem." Some say their
roommate changes personality
completely when drinking, maybe
becoming obnoxious. Missing

classes is another problem. The
excuse given for destruction of
property in residence halls is often
drunkenness. Arguments with
friends may increase greatly after
drinking. A person with an alcohol
problem may drive drunk. "By the
time of serious black-outs and
pass-outs, you have a serious
problem," Parrott said.
A black-out occurs when a
drinker does not remember a span
of time when everyone else thought
he was functioning normally.
Passing out can be dangerous
because death could result if the
drinker chokes on his own vomit.
