Turin: By Richard Meyers Q?m?cock Stuff Writer Paul Turin enjoys being shot at occasionally. No, not with bullets or arrows, but with soccer balls. The 5-11, 167-pound goalkeeper is in his final year at the University of South Carolina and holds all the records at that position in the young but highly successful soccer program. "Paul Turin is an outstanding collegiate goalkeeper, one of the best in the South," according to Gamecock soccer coach Mark Berson. In his first season at USC in 1978, Turin recorded ten shutouts in 17 games and allowed only 11 goals. This is quite an i/>/inmnlichmont fr\r* cnmnnna u>Kn awviiipiioilltiviiv 1V4 OV111VVIIV VT I ivy never was serious about soccer until his senior year in high school. "I DIDN'T start playing soccer until the sixth grade," recalled Turin. "I kind of got stuck playing goalie. The first year I played, the team I was on didn't lose a game. That wasn't because I was the goalie, it was because everybody was pood and I inst wound un playing goal. I started liking it and began to learn a lot from my coaches about the position. I only played my senior year in high school because I was also playing baseball at the time." Turin moved on to Meramec Community College in St. Louis, Mo., and gave up baseball to play soccer full time. Meramec won the national junior college championship in 1976 with Turin in the nets. The following season, the team came within one eoal of capturing the title for the second consecutive year. THE GENERAL education major recorded 12 shutouts in 26 games, and was named as a member of the first team junior college Ail-American team in his freshman season. In 1977, he was an honorable mention selection to the team and was All-Midwest. Turin and just about all his teammates were sought by many colleges with scholarship offers. "Twelve of the thirteen seniors on the 1977 team received scholar ships. I had about four offers before I heard about Carolina. I didn't hear about USC until a couple of my teammates talked to Coach Berson." "WE ALL started thinking that if we went to South Carolina, we would still be a team. Since it was the first year of soccer here, we felt it would be easier to fit in three guys than to start a new team which never played together. We are all pretty close friends. We wanted to stick together." Turin has never regretted his decision to attend USC. "I really enjoy n nere, tne people are really nice. More people are coming out to the games than last year. I'm just amazed at the way soccer is growing here. It's unreal." Tennis i By Rick Mohn Qamocock Stuff Writer In a major upset, the Carolina tennis team opened its fall season by edging powerhouse Tennessee 5-4 on Saturday. The Volunteers were ranked tenth in the country preseason, and before the match Carolina Coach Ron Smarr had said, "They probably have the best team east of the Mississippi." The outcme alone, in the first round of an invitational tournament held in Atlanta, was surprising enough. But consider this: the Gamecocks played Saturday with only four of their top six players. "It's realy incredible that we played this well," Smarr said by telephone after the match. "Besides missing ULf Petersson and David Kramer, Chuck Hodgin played only in doubles. This was a i K ) t '? i 1 ' USC goal keeper : 'best in S rto n-N ma ioriner iavorue spun of baseball, where pitchers want to hit and hitters possess an urge to take to the mound and pitch, Turin has achieved soccer's parallel achievement; a goalie scoring a goal. 44I was playing for Meramec at the time and we had a seven to nothing lead and we were awarded a penalty shot. I ran all the way up the field, took the shot and scored! That was a pretty big thrill for 1 me." < Turin noted that the mental aspect of soccer goalie is often overlooked.
