Goff plea
By Gary Martin
Gamecock Staff Writer
Coach Ray Goff's game strategy
was simple?to run the ball
straight at the Volunteer defense.
"We just wanted to establish a
running game to open up the
passing game," he said.
But the Gamecock runners did
more than just establish a running
game, iney rippea me Tennessee
defense to shreds, amassing 386
yards rushing to lead the Carolina
junior varsity squad to a 34-6 rout
over the Volunteers at Neyland
Stadium.
Sophomore running back Percy
Reeves led the Gamecock ground
attack with 138 yards on 16 carries
and junior James McKie added 118
yards on 17 carries.
GOFF ATTRIBUTED USC's (
success on the ground to the of- ,
fensive line. "Our offensive line '
did such a good job blocking that
we stayed right with it," Goff said.
"Our runners were averaging 4-5
vards Der earrv so w<> taaIIv didn't
have to throw the bail that much."
USC got on the scoreboard first
in the opening quarter as McKie
scrambled into the end zone from
three yards out. The extra point

USC SCORED once more in the
second half when Oliver grabbed a
nine-yard pass from gregg
uicsiiam vm a uaimtri reverse.
Fleetwood's kick gave the
Gamecocks their final total.
A 26-yard interception return by
Tommy Farmer gave Tennessee
its only score of the night as the
Gamecock defense completely
shut down the Volunteer attack.
Interceptions by Phillip Vickery,
Tim Rhino, Neal Timmons and
Freddy Snow totally immobilized
an otherwise futile Tennessee
passing attack.
Beckham, sharing the quar
leroack duties with Bishop,
rounded out an excellent afternoon
by completing four of six passes
for a total of 31 yards and one
touchdown pass.
Punter Timmy Lee made his
appearance on the playing field
only three times, booting for an
