This is always an exciting time of year for those of
us who keep an eye on things in the entertainment
world: it's time for the new TV season. Will this be
the year that television lives up to its potential? Is this
the year that Fred Silverman will work his magic for
NBC9 Is this, to use the athletic department's
parlance, Next Year?
Nope.
Every year we await anxiously to see if TV will do

get worse. Television is coming off of its most
critically blasted season in many years; some of last
year's shows were just marvelously bad. Amazingly
enough, things aren't getting any better.
Well, let's look over the offerings.
ABC: The number one network, paradoxically
enough, has the most new shows on the air. First of
all, The Associates sounds as if it could be this year's

We've all seen 240-Robert before, in shows from
Sky King to Emergency. How many ways can you
make a car go over a cliff, anyway? The Lazarus
Syndrome is a novel concept?a doctor show. And
from the preview episodes, this one looks especially
prone to using tense confrontations between doctor
and hospital administrator, or tender scenes of the
doctor's long-suffering wife taking care of the kids.
Doctor Kildare lives again.
Hurt to Hart is Switch, The Rockford Files, Vega$,
etc., etc., all rolled into one. Benson won't really have
to be very good to be successful; it's wedged firmly
between Laverne and Shirley and Taxi on Thursdays.
Out of the Blue combines Heaven Can Wait with
Morfe and Mindy, which means that it can get by on
its own momentum. We're supposed to like this one
even if it's not funny.
CBS: Network number two is really scraping the
bottom this year for comedies. Struck By Lightning
will rely on the horrific looks of Jack Elam for
laughs; its plot possibilities are amazingly limited.
Working Stiffs stars Jim Belushi, John's brother and
vast inferior, and Michael Keaton as?how's this for

an exciting idea?janitors.
The Last Resort has been on the CBS shelf for a
year, and for good reason: although it's from the
Mary Tyler Moore team, it has more in common with
Moore's disastrous last two series than with the
team's best efforts, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and
Lou Grant.
Finally, California Fever stars Jimmy McNichol as
the pursuer of a meaningless, hedonistic, mellowed out
life on the California beach. This one should
definitely gain a 40 share with the 12-to-16-screamingBarry-Manilow-fan
group.
NBC: Perhaps NBC's season is best typified by the
most illogical television move in the past few years:
the character of Sheriff Lobo has been spun off into
his own series from the awful bomb B.J. and the Bear
(that's right, the show about the truck driver and the
monkey). Only NBC's frequent combinations of the
casts of Diff'rent Strokes and Hello, Larry into onehour
specials match this audacious programming
move. J
A Man Called Sloane might as well be called A Man
Called Bond; NBC isn't even pretending that they
aren't trying to create a low-budget clone of the Ian
Fleming character. Shirley casts Shirley Jones as yet
another widowed mother "trying to make it on her
own." You would think NBC could find better things
to do with their top-line stars.
Against all the experts, I'm predicting that Buck
Rogers will be NBC's big hit. Of course, with NBC it

NBC also has Kate Columbo, Eischied, and From
Here to Eternity, none of which merit much at- J
tention. Eternity was one of those amazing shows
that was developed from a mini-series before the
mini-series was even aired.
So there we are: rehashes, spinoffs, sloppy copies.
Television has developed an aggravating pattern of
perpetuating its own mediocrity. I wish I could tell
you that this season will be one of imaginative
