USC President James B
Holderman and the Columbia Cit>
Council's approval is necessary
before the Greene Street project
begins.
"Understandably, even though
the university has permission t(
have Greene Street closed-ofi
during certain portions of the day
it is still a through street, and the
city has to make sure that it has a
certain amount of access back anc
forth for fire safety, as well as jusl
traffic patterns around the city,'
Rinker said. The city has already
approved preliminary plans for the
project, Rinker added.
THE CLOSING of Greene Street
has been a subject of conflict
between USC and city hall for the
past 17 years. The conflict began ir
1975 during a student demon
stration in which 17 students were
arrested. The street was finally
closed Jan. 21,1978 from 9:30 am tc
4 pm for a trial period which . was
later extended in August 1978.
The improvements, according tc
Rinker, will probably include the
building of two brick entrance
gateways with wrought iron gates
some brick paving to make
pedestrian paths more apparent tc

funds are available, some land

Russell House.
The work will hopefully begin ir
October in conjunction with the
renovation to the third floor 01
Russell House which was approvec
by the committee Thursday
Rinker said.
OTHER RENOVATIONS whicl
the committee is considering foi
this fiscal year include: continue<
improvement to the Horseshoe
area, mechanical improvements t<
David College, improvements t<
the recently acquired Wad<
Hampton Hotel and improvements
of the university's heating am
cooling facilities.
