Alien: Ridley Scott has directed
Alien in a manner so oblivious to
the viewer's feelings that the film
often seems downright sinister.
Anything he perceives as potentially
jolting (or revolting) to an
audience he puts on screen, including
several scenes of disembowelment.
(R) Jefferson Square.
The Amityville Horror: The
crummy performances of James
uroiin, Margot Kidder and Rod
Steiger ruin this filmization of Jay
Anson's best-selling book. (R)
Dutch Square.
Breaking Away: The best ensemble
acting of the year
highlights this comedy about an
Indiana youth's dream of
becoming a champion bicycle
racer. Peter Yates (Bullit and The
Deep) directed with a fine eye for
detail. (PG) Spring Valley.
The Concord: Airport '79: The
fun in watching Airport '79 comes
from trying to figure out just how
far into the realm of silliness the
movie will CO. Past the noint of no
return is the answer one finally
arrives at. (PG) Richland Mall.
Days of Heaven: Nestor
Almendros won an Oscar for the
stunning work he did in
photographing this lush
melodrama about a dying farmer
and the three migrant workers who
exploit him. Richard Gere, Brooke
Adams, Linda Manz and
playwright Sam Shepard are
excellent in the leading roles, and
Terrence Mallick's direction is
flawless. (PG) Gamecock.

feature, The Outlaw: Josey Wales,
is an interesting Western drama,
well photographed and surprisingly
well acted. Clint Eastwood
and Sondra Locke star in
both films. (PG) Gamecock.
Escape to Athena: A group of
American prisoners decides to
break out of a Nazi prison, taking
several priceless German art i
treasures with them. Roger Moore '
and Telly Savalas co-star. (PG)
Bush River Mall.
Grease: I've seen it 11 times, so
far. The "You're the One That I 1
Want" sequence, wherein a hot
unvia iNewion-Jonn struts and
whirls about the sceen in a most
seductive manner, is the absolute (
highlight of the past year in film.

Hot Stuff: A cops-robbers r
comedy with some delightfully
original twists. Dom Deluise (whc?
co-stars with Suzanne Pleshette
and Jerry Reed) directed in much
the same manner as his mentor. I
Mel Brooks, might have done.
(PG) Columbia Mall and Dutch

Jaws: There's no reason not to

Manhattan; The best movie of
1979, and it gets better each time
you see it. Woody Allen and Diane
Keaton have done it again. Their
interplay provides enough laughs
to keep the viewer smiling for
several days, and Mariel

Michael Murphy are fine in support.
