Carson-NBC dispute
NEW YORK ? Attorneys for "Tonight Show" host
Johnny Carson will ask Los Angeles Superior Court to
decide when his contract with NBC expires, according
to television reporter Rona Barrett.
Attributing her story to sources, she said on ABC's
"Good Morning America" program that attorneys for
both Carson and the network have agreed to the motion
because they are anxious to end differences over when
the contract expires.
Carson contends the pact expired in April. However,
the network claims he is bound to it until 1981, she said.
The comedian celebrates his 17th anniversary with
NBC on Oct. 1.
Barrett said the court is expected to decide the
question "in the near future." There have been reports
that ABC is trying to sign Carson to a contract.
Gas goes metric
BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. ? Drivers passing a Mobil
station in this Saratoga County village for the past
three weeks might have encountered a jarring sight?
gasoline lor 27.1 cents.
But that isn't 27.1 cents a gallon. Robert Doheney has
converted his pumps to metric readings and is selling
precious petroleum by the liter, an amount a little
larger than a quart.
"Try me, I'm metric," said the sign on Doheny's t
pumps. But under state law, he must also post his pergallon
price, currently $1.02.6 for regular.
Doheny said the change was forced by gas prices of
more than $1 a gallon?too much for most pumps to
record?and confusion over half-gallon pricing.

Kennedy favored
COLUMBIA ? Sen. Edward Kennedy will seek and
win the presidency in 1980, the head of a national effort
to draft the Massachusetts Democrat for president has
predicted.
At a news conference Wednesday, William Winpisinger
criticized President Carter's energy policies
and other positions. He said Carter talked like a
Democrat when campaigning, but has behaved like a
Republican in office.
Winpinsinger said he did not believe the Chappaquiddick
incident would be a significant factor in
Kennedy's campaign. He said Kennedy is a "more
mature man than the young scared senator was 10
years ago."
Winpisinger characterized those who recall Chappaquiddick
whenever Kennedy's name is brought up as
"the Chappaquiddick bigots."
He is currently president of the million-member
International Association of Machinists and Aerospace
Workers. He said the union's leadership was "absolutely
behind Kennedy's candidacy for president."
