The Long Riders is Savannah Smith's third motion picture.
Her first, Five Days From Home, starring George
Peppard, didn't do too well at the box office ("I think it
didn't have enough sex and violence," Smith said), but her
second, North Dallas Forty, is a big hit and she's winning
rave reviews for her performance in it.
Smith portrays Joanne Remington, a Southern Belle with
an insatiable appetite for chocolate pudding and sex,
though not necessarily in that order. The role required a
lengthy nude scene, which Smith was not very enthusiastic

This is the first article dealing with television I've written. T
behind it? Three of the decade's best films will be making thei
debuts on consecutive nights, beginning this weekend.
ABC's Sunday Night Movie at 9 is Annie Hall, Woody A]
traordinarily perceptive look at modern-day romance. '

The movie took home four 1977 Oscars, including Best Pict
Actress (Keaton), Best Director and Best Original Screenplay

because of the daffy lead performance of Keaton. She even sii
film and is, of course, nothing short of remarkable.
On Monday night at 9, NBC will present Coming Home
multiple Oscar winner (for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best
Screenplay). Directed by the always on-target Hal Ashby,
derfully sexy love story details the romance between a p;
Vietnam veteran (Jon Voight) and the California housew:

The picture will be shown with about ten minutes of prevous
footage, which was added to take the place of two steamy sex s<
Michael Ritchie's Semi-Tough also will have undergor
surgery by the time it reaches the small screen as NBC's Tuest
Movie at 9.
In it, Burt Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson portray tv
professional football players who live with the team owner's <
played by Jill Clayburgh. The movie satirizes everything fr

Semi-Tough will be especially intriguing to watch this til
Reynolds and Clayburgh have teamed again for Starting Ov
comedy that will be released to theatres on October 5.

She was able to make the scene work because of the help
she received from her co-star, Nick Nolte. "He's the most
giving, loving person I have ever worked with," she said,
adding that she feels "auite sure" Nolte will receive an
Oscar nomination for his performance in the picture.
Smith is originally from Springhill, La., but she now
resides in southern California. "No one ever would have
found out about me in Louisiana," she said.
After moving west, Smith was invited to join Lee
Strasburg's prestigious Actor's Studio. The opportunity to
work with Strasburg, she said, "is the most important thing
in my life. I would rather be in Actor's Studio than play
Robert Redford's wife," she admitted.
In The Long Riders, Smith portrays Zee James, Jesse's

said. The role hasn't been very hard to do so far, Smith
explained, except for the background work.
"I did a tremendous amount of work," she said, "and I
prepared for my role by reading. I got every book on Jesse
James there was in the Beverly Hills library and I read
them all. Then I looked at pictures. I looked at pictures of
the way people sat, the way people dressed and the way
people used their hands. Pictures are very important
because how people pose says a lot about the way they are
in life."
Smith isn't sure what comes after The Long Riders, but
as long as she's able to act, she'll be happy. "I just want to
work and be as good an actress as I can," she said.
