The top ten singles of the week, according
to Billboard, are:
1. My Sharona The Knack
A blistering guitar solo distinguishes this
catchy tune from The Knack's
phenomenally bestselling first album. But
how manv times can vou listen to someone
go "muh-muh-muh my Sharona" before you
go buh-buh-buh bananas?
2. After the Love Has Gone ... Earth Wind &
Fire
Maurice White and company let all their
soulful blues flow on this lush number.
Commercila success hasn't spoiled EWF's
sense of good music-making, and after the
rather weak "Boogie Wonderland" it's good
to hear their polished vocals put to good use
again.
3. The Devil Went Down to Georgia . Charlie
Daniels Band
From the legend-like story to Daniels'
furiously virtuostic fiddling, "The Devil
Went Down" is easily the most fun song to
hit the charts in several years. The chorus
has an irresistable singalong feeling to it,
and it's almost impossible to dislike.
4. Don't Bring Me Down E Lq
This is ELO's best number in quite a
while, breaking away from their selfimposed
formula music of the last few
albums. Incorporating a pleasingly hardrock
beat and some good lyric hooks
("You're lookin' good just like a snake in the
grass"), "Don't Bring Me Down" hearkens
back to verv earlv ELO and numbers like
"Roll Over Beethoven".
5. Lead Me On Maxine Nightingale j

mediocrity. It's seemingly an attempt to
combine Linda Ronstadt and Aretha
Franklin in one song, and there just isn't
enough room for both of them.
6. Sad Eyes Robert John
Really competent bubblegum music is
rare these days, but Robert John has all the
right ideas in "saa uyes." ine nines introduction
leads right into a pleasantly
mindless ditty with all the right sounds in all
the right places.
7. Lonesome Loser Little River Band
First Under the Wire is reportedly the
Little River Band's best album, and from
the sound of this tune that just may be the
case. The a capella introduction makes you
sit up and listen to this one, and the rest of
the song doesn't disappoint.
8. Ml Never Love This Wav Again... Dionne
Warwick
This song goes to show that there is still
room in the music business for the flash
Vegas-type numbers that one invariably
associates with John Davidson or some
other such clone. In fact, one can't help but
think that Dionne Warwick is doing her level
best in this tune to be Diana Ross. She's not.
9. Good Times Chic
Chic epitomizes everything boring,
repetitious and decadent about disco. Their
songs are distinguishable only by their
titles. Disco in general is not too good, but
when it gets this crassly commercial, it's
downright disgusting.
10. Sail On Commodores
Okay, so maybe this one does make the
Commodores sound like a country-western
group, but I still say it's one of the most
beautifully written and performed songs of
the year.
