Garner served as a staff assistant for the Gamecock Club for nine and one-half years before leaving in September 1978. A 1 It embezzlement charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail or a $10,000 fine, according to Anders. More than $19,000 has been reported missing from Gamecock Club funds over the past five years, and investigations are continuing by the State Law Enforcement Division. Anders said Th#?r#? ar? no other parties being investigated other than Garner and the Gamecock Club, he added. Garner was entrusted by the Gamecock Club with, "receiving, possession of, and the transfer of," contributions made to the booster organization, according to the Grand Jurv indirtmpnt Tho i? dictment also said the missing funds attributed to Garner were in the form of "coin and currency," although the major portion of Gamecock Club contributions are ~ in the form of checks, according to Jim Carlen, athletic director and nead football coach. Vaughan was called in at the request of the USC Athletic Department, according to Hugh Munn, SLED Public Information Director. SLED then began its investigation at Vaughan's request January 3, Munn said. Vaughan asked for help in accounting for almost $19,000 in missing uamecock Club cash receipts. No other employees or former employees of the Gamecock Club were named in the indictment. Ed Pitts, executive secretary of the Gamecock Club, declined comment on the indictment.
