ATLANTA ? It would take only
two words to describe the 14-year
career of Montreal Expo first
tiasertian Torty Perez eon?
sistency and durability. For 12
summers with the Cincinnati Reds
and the past two in Canada, the 37year-old
Cuban has driven in runs
with amazing regularity.
He has been named to the
National League all-star team
seven times and played in four
World Series. He has driven in 90
or more runs for 12 straight years
and has averaged 151.1 games a
season. Perez has also led the
league in several fielding
categories during his career as
well.
POPULAR WITH HIS fellow
players and fans alike, Perez came
to the Expos in 1976 in a trade that
left the Cincinnati fans more than a
little bit unhappy. The Reds ob
tained pitchers Woody Fryman
and Dale Murray for the services
of Perez, in a deal which was made
because of the first baseman's age.
The results of the trade are obvious;
Perez has knocked in over
90 runs and hit 19 homers in both
seasons with Montreal while both
Fryman and Murray have since
been dealt away from the Reds.
However, Perez looks at the
trade objectively and said it was a
logical move for Cincinnati to
make. While he was not happy with
it at first, he explained that he was
not surprised when he learned of
the move that sent him packing
north of the border.
"I was ready for the trade
because I went through a lot of
things over the last three years I
was in Cincinnati," Perez said. "I

and he wanted to play. Then when
the trade came up, I didn't refuse
because I liked the offer Montreal
gave me and the challenge they
gave me with a young ball club. I
though I could help in a lot of
'different ways."
HIS BIGGEST contribution to
the team is being in the lineup
everday and being able to get men
home in a critical situation. While
many players have their problems
when batting with runners in
scoring position, Perez has made a
science of it. In fact, Montreal fans
almost seem to expect him to
deliver anytime he steps up to the
plate with a runner on second or
third.
"When you have men on base,
sometimes you overswing," he
said. "You try to swing too hard
and take your eyes off the ball and
your body off the ball. When there
are men on base I concentrate on

everything in there to hit the ball
better.
SOME GUYS TRY to hit a
home run when they've got men on
base and pop the ball up. I just try
to keep my eyes on the ball and try
to hit it hard somewhere," Perez
added.
The 6-2 pound first baseman is
not only productive with his bat.

Defensively, he works hard and is
always trying to improve his skills.
Perez said that his success and
durability does not come from
playing day to day during the
season, but rather before it during
spring training.

also helps you in the later stages of
the season when the pennant races
are at stake. There must be some
truth to that theory considering
some of Perez's greatest moments
have been in the play-offs and
World Series. ?
"We have a six week training
program in the spring," Perez
said. "We work hard there and I
try to get my weight down and do a
lot of running. I work on my
fielding and my batting and try to
keep my legs in shape."
PHYSICALLY, Perez did not
have to make any adjustments
upon arriving ir> Montreal.
However, the change of scenery
was not so easy for him and his
family off the field. Being of Latin
descent, he speaks with a heavy
Spanish accent which is pretty
much out of place in a province
where most of its inhabitants
speak French.
But the situation did not bother
Perez at all. He viewed the
language difference as kind of a
challenge both to him and his wife
along with his two sons. While he
could get by speaking English, the
first baseman has taken up French
anyway. By doing this, he has
made himself that much more
DODular with the baseball fans in

Quebec.
EVEN THOUGH Perez has been
traded away from the team he
played most of his career with, he
holds no grudges against them. In
fact, he still looks back to the days
when he and the Reds were winning
everything in sight.
