By Sharon Buchanan Oam?cock St?H Writw USC's parking situation this year is expected to remain similar to that of last year, with no drastic change in the number of vehicles on campus, according to Danny Baker, director of parking and motor vehicle registration. Students have the option of purchasing a vehicle registration decal according to their residency to avoid breaking parking regulations. A CS decal is for commuting students living offcampus. An S decal is for oncampus students and an E decal is for students taking evening classes. Students with an E decal may nave aayiime classes, uui they cannot park in student zones until after 4:30 p.m., Baker said. On-campus students, especially those living in South Tower and South Building, frequently com plain about problems of having tc walk back and forth to their dorms late at nieht because Darkins spaces near their dorms cannot tx found, according to Baker. "My advice to them is rathei than parking illegally on yellow curbs, when walking late at nighi from the "pit" (the parking lot or Blossom Street) to the dorm, make sure to do it in pairs," Baker said. "The yellow curb on Bull Street is a fire zone, and if you park then Two USOs to study in. There is no reason for students living in Bates House, Bates West and Cliff Apartments to drive to campus during the week, Baker said. They should get a decal and keep their cars parked in the designated lots. Taking the shuttle bus to classes would help the commuting students who must drive to campus, he added. "We recommend that commuting students avoid east ' pamnns (S#?nate> and Barnwell streets, BA building) as much as , possible. Parking is bad there, and students often get frustrated and park illegally. It is better to park I at Bates House and take the \ shuttle,"Baker said. ; A second parking alternative for J students, according to Baker, is to purchase a space in one of the parking garages. Blossom Street ' garage spaces cost $40 a semester for regular cars and $35 a semester J for compact cars. Pendletor i Street garage and Wade Hamptor Hotel parking spaces cost $48 a * semester. A meter expiration results in a $l-ticket, and parking in undesignated zones results in a $5ticket. Ten-dollar tickets are issued to unregistered vehicles parked in student or faculty zones. A special $15 fine is issued to vehicles parked in handicapped zones, on sidewalks or for blocking other vehicles, Baker said. About $70,000 is taken in by the Department of Parking and Motor Vehicle Registration during each six-month period, and about $315,000 was taken in this past year for parking stickers, including garage stickers, according to 1 Baker. The money taken in through parking garage stickers is used to pay for construction of the garages and all other money taken in 1 through fines and stickers goes 1 into a general university fund, 1 according to a department \ spokesman. Towing charges range from $5 to $23 depending on who does the towing and how much trouble it is. "Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., we use the university towing service which is more convenient. When we have to use outside firms, we havp nr? nnntrnl nvpr the towinC charge," Baker said. Although towing is the single most expensive parking violation action, the most common source of financial problems occurs with the build-up of unpaid tickets, according to Baker. A student has three school days to either pay or appeal a parking ticket. If nothing is done, late fees will be tacked on to the fine, Baker said. A $l-ticket increases to $2, $5 to $7, $10 to $12 and $15 to $17. "To appeal a ticket, the student can come to me or other members of the parking staff. He added that tickets do build up, and if they are not paid, they are added on to tuition for the next semester. "If you totally disregard regulations and get a ticket everyday, sooner or later you will get towed. It is a good idea to discuss parking and payment problems before school registration because during registration we are usually very busy, he added. There are many more parking stickers issued than there are parking spaces, but everyone is not on campus at the same time, Baker said. "If you consider not getting a parking ticket important in your list of priorities, then you can get to campus early and avoid any parking problems," he added. vill be evaluated here from letters ofessors.
