The series enters it eighth season on CBS after surviving departures ot cast members Wayne Rogers (trapper John MelntyreV Larry Linville (Frank Burns) and Maclean Stevenson (Henry Blake). Despite the major changes, M*A*S*H has ranked well in the David Ogden Stiers ratings, mainly because the show's producers did not try to hire new actors to fill the vacated role but created new roles. Following the departures of Rogers, Linville and Stevenson came the arrivals of Harry Morgan (Col. Potter), Mike Farrel (B.J. Hunnicutt) and David Ogden Stiers (Maj. Winchester), all actors of quality given new roles. Burghoff is leaving the show because he felt he's fixed in Radar's role and may not continue to advance as an actor. Stiers begins his second season as Winchester, who replaced Maj. Frank Burns as the 4077th's resident pain. When Stiers was asked to join the M*A*S*H cast he told the show's producers he did not want to take up where Larry Linville's role of Major Burns left off. "I was pretty sure after the first meeting that was not what they had in mind," Stiers said. "I told them I was not interested in playing Major Burns and they delt with that firmly by telling me that Mike Farrel is not Wayne Rogers and Harry Morgan is not Maclean Stevenson, and they wouldn't do that to me." "Doctors would come because of their certain specialty and work their surgical magic and then leave for another M*A*S*H unit where they were needed." "It's tough for Alan sometimes, especially if he's blocking a scene that he's supposed to be in," he said. "But he's done a superb job." Stiers said he would like to direct at least one M*A*S*H episode this season in addition to his acting duties. "I had watched when we were on Monday nights and we placed 17th out of 60 shows. The next week we were on Saturdays and we dropped to 47th."
