To the Editor:
Everyone is entitled to his own
opinion, but when he makes it
public in a newspaper he should
speak tactfully and should be
certain of his facts.
For a graduate student in international
business studies, it is
obvious that Edward D. McCarthy

The major concern of oil companies,
and for that matter all
business corporations, is to
maximize their profits. But the
point is not whether they have a
right to do so but how they go about
doing this.
The record shows oil companies

IN APRIL 1979, the Department
of Energy accused the major oil

a congressional study, released

this country was mainly a result of

the answer is in changing
to a quarter system, in which there
are four equal periods of time
instead of the two large periods
and two miniscule terms used in
USC's semester system. This

semesters and summer school
terms further removes the student

oil.
During the latest oil shortage,
the oil companies ordered their
tankers to cruise at half speed "to
conserve energy," but this also
aggravates the situation by
slowing down the importation of
oil.
Lately, Texaco was fined for
selling leaded gasoline from
pumps labeled "unleaded" . . . and
the record continues. No one is
saying the companies should not
make profits, but what everyone
wants is for the companies to make
reasonable profits and be guided

IN THE FUTURE, Mr. Edward
D. McCarthy Jr., I suggest you try
to understand what is being said
before you jump onto your
typewriter. I would also urge that
before you jump into a pool, vou
learn how to swim.
It is obvious from your letter you
do not have the slightest idea of
what is going on in the oil business.
I suggest you read John M. Blair's
"The Control of Oil" and educate
yourself more on the subject.
