Recent resignations from two ( .v
Campus Bookstore employees \ '
were requested because of im- :
proper practices that "should not '
have been permitted," according 1
to Robert Stewart, director of f ^
auxiliary services. ;.
George Adams, business f
manager, and Ben Swanson, ; ,
director of the bookstore, were i
given three alternatives, ac- j ;
cording to James Campbell, vice
president of student affairs. They "
could either be susnended without L'
pay, resign or be dismissed, f .
Campbell said. Adams resigned, ;ii|l
and Swanson resigned after being \
placed on administrative r
suspension without pay for an pill
unspecified amount of time, ac- \ ; <

THE RESIGNATIONS resulted f
from an annual internal audit, [
Stewart said. The audit revealed I
that charge accounts were
established for bookstore em- f .
ployees. These accounts were an
outgrowth of employee discounts, 3,
which had nreviouslv been ; '.V
established, according to Campbell.
Cash advances were being ;
given to student employees on f ^
their salary, a practice that is "not
acceptable to USC regulations,"
Campbell said.
Swanson had owned a bookstore ;
from anv sfnt<? funded i v
institution, and he was accustomed
to providing these services to his
employees, Stewart said. These
practices are not permitted where
state money is involved, he added.
When the audit began, there
were suspicions that some cash '
receipts and funds were missing,
but everything was accounted for
in the audit. Camobell said. "The
state was not defrauded out of any >
money," Stewart said.
STEWART, WHO IS the acting
director of the bookstore, said a
new business manager has been j
hired. Charles Serene will assume i
Adams' position Aug. 16. ,
Stewart said no legal action will J .
be taken against Swanson or ''/'
