These vouna lac [ cheerleading camp. New stud & By Sharon Buchanan Gamecock Staff Writer WUSC-FM has been experiencing difficulties with proper soundproofing and cooling facilities since the completion of the new studio, according to Ron Marsh, station manager. The studio is not cool enough and a brick wall in both the production studio and the control room needs soundproofing, according to employees of the station. Noise can be heard from the Russell House Gameroom, which is below WUSC, and a window was left open behind the paneling of another wall, employees said. Peter Stiehr, manager of building and equipment maintenance, said a low temperature cannot be maintained at WUSC because of an old pump. "BASICALLY, chilled water for east campus comes from the east energy plant located near Gambrell Hall. It provides 45-degree water for about 21 buildings in that particular loop," Stiehr said. "If there is an unusual load (such as an extra building to cool) the temperature may climb," he added. Before the renovation of the west wing of Russell House, WUSC received heating and cooling from an independent source, according to Stiehr. The pump in Russell House was adequate for this closed system and independent chilling source, he said. Stiehr said with renovations on the third floor of Russell House, the pump used in the closed system is now connected with the east energy plant. "We are now having problems with that pump getting enough chilled water from the east energy The GAMECOCK is the student newspaper of the University of South Carolina and is published throe times a weex on rvionoays. "WE REALIZED this some time ago, and in June we ordered a new pump which we expect at any time." Stiehr said. It will be a larger chilled water circulative pump, he added. Jon Clemmensen, director of student media, said a wall paneled (soundproofed) over an open window lets sound, heat, cold and rain into the studio. A brick wall, which is also not soundproofed, has not been fixed, he said. "I relied on somebody's expertise who said a brick wall is a good attenuator. Obviously this is nui irtvc, utrcau&e iiuia'e is strcping in," Clemmensensaid. Herbert Brinson, manager of renovations, said he has not received complaints from anyone involved with WUSC about the sound problem. BKINSON SAID he did not tell Clemmensen that the brick wall was good for soundproofing, but he could see the reasoning behind such a statement. "A blunt wall is better for soundproofing than a plaster wall, but noise travels much faster. I can see where somebody might say brick is good for soundproofing though," Brinsonsaid. "When the work at WUSC was completed, I noticed sound coming up from the floor," Bass said. "I suggested to Jon Clemmensen that the corner speakers in the Gameroom be moved, disconnected or turned down to a lower volume to alleviate WUSC's problem," he said. Bass and Brinson both said WUSC must not have conveyed their sound problems to the right 1 - I people. "THE DILEMMA could be that people involved at WUSC just haven't complained to anyone who can do anything about the problems. Perhaps if they complained to their staff adviser, it would get to Ed Bass or myself," Brinson added. PREPARE FOR: j41"!"
