A lot of exceptional softball and a
little Florida sunshine helped spur
the USC Lady Gamecocks to a 6-0
record over their spring break
tour. Spending the week in Florida,
Carolina faced the Orlando Suns
and the Canadian Comets.
Unlike most teams the Lady

ACCORDING TO USC Coach
Judy Martino, "The ASA contains
I probably the best players in the
country. They're better than most r?
.* college teams. ASA is the top level g
of women's fast pitch." |

Freshman Paula Sparks was
brought in to cover for the injuret

player for us. She plays both |

Maureen got hurt Paula just went I
in and took over," stated Martino. |
Sparks also leads the team in a

Playing her first year of fast pitch '
softball, Burdell has built up a .339
batting average.
"IT'S UNUSUAL for a slow pitch
player to convert so quickly to fast
pitch," Martino explained. "Star
has a lot of talent."
Behind the plate, freshman
Laurie Fuller seems to have things
under control. The Lady
Gamecocks also count on her of
iensiveiy, as tne catcher holds a
.301 batting average. "Laurie is a
real gutsy type of player," Martino
said. "She's tremendous behind
the plate. She's also a very good
hitter. Lately she's been getting
about five or six hits a game."
This season Martino has switched
pitcher Bonnie Vena to the
third base position. "We had to

THE SIX WINS' in the Florida

20-3. The Gamecocks defeated the
Comets 7-3 and 17-2 while they

Recently Carolina downed
Winthrop 14-1, and 8-1 in a
doubleheader at Rock Hill, S.C.
"We've been playing super,"
Martino said. "I'm really proud of
them."
