A proposal to deny credit and
apply a pass-fail standard on all
courses numbered 100 and lower
was rejected unanimously Wednesday
by the Faculty Senate.
The proposal, formed by the
Committee on Curricula and
Courses, stated "All university
courses numbered 100 and lower
shall be considered to be remedial
in nature. Such remedial courses
shall be taken pass-fail, and the
credit hours received upon successful
completion shall not be
counted toward a baccalaureate
degree."
In the March Faculty Senate
meeting, David H. Rembert, Jr.,
chairman of the Committee on
Curricula and Courses, said that a
certain level of competency must
be met. He said that a student's
motivation must be the reason to

grades.
Rembert said the committee
wanted to make any course under
101 remedial, and those courses
listed in the USC Bulletin with the
number 100 would have to change
numbers. He said the problem is
what the university considers
remedial.

course such as English 100 woulc
be disoriented because a pass-fai
rule would admit a "D" foi

student much incentive.
John Kimmey, English
professor, said that English 100 is
an integral part of the freshmar
program and is not considered ?
remedial course. Kimmey addec
that if a "D" student does not ge
credit for graduation, the Englist
department won't receive anj
money to pay for those courses. H<
said the English Department coulc
possibly lose about $7 million.
Kimmey said the standards foi
English 100 are high because 2S
percent of the students failed thij
course during the past five years.
In a letter to faculty senators
Carolyn Matalene, USC Englisl
professor, said if the proposal ha<
