A unique form of sports competition is
coming to USC ? the Special Olympics area
track and field games.
The games will take place at the Weems
O'Baskin Track and Field, located between the
baseball field and the roundhouse, April 18. The
games will give mentally retarded individuals
six years of age and older a chance to participate
in various athletic events.
Most of the individuals competing are from
institutions and public schools in Area 7 of the
state which includes Lexington, Richland,
Newberry and Fairfield counties, according to
Ronnie Bouknight, area 7 coordinator for the
Special Olympics.
"We're hoping for a turn-out of anywhere
from 300-900 participants this year. Last year
we had 800," Bouknight said.
MENTALLY retarded children and adults
who have IQ scores of 75 or less may enter
events such as the 50-meter dash, the mile run,
standing long jump and the pontathalon which

levels by assigning them to competition
divisions based on age and performance. The
games provide much the same pageantry and
i excitement of regular Olympic Games, such as
opening and closing ceremonies, awards
presentations and cultural activities.
The purpose of Special Olympics is to provide
the mentally retarded with positive, successful
experiences in sport. Through these experiences,
it is hoped that they will gain confidence
and build a positive self-image
associated with success rather than failure,
