In Fast Break Gabriel Kaplan portrays Manhattanite
David Greene, a delicatessen clerk who
dreams of one day becoming a basketball coach. He
sends a countless number of job applications to
colleges across the country, but none of them seem to
want him until he contacts Cadwallader. an obscure
university in northern Nevada.
When the president of Cadwallader comes all the
way to New York to visit him, David knows the
coaching job is his. The fact that he's only going to
pay David $60 for each game he wins makes no difference.
It's still a coaching job, and David would
probably do it for free if only the president had asked
him. It's really just icing on the cake when the
president tells him that if he can beat top-10 power
Nevada State, he'll give him a three-year, $30,000 a
year contract.
Before leaving New York, David makes a quick run
through Harlem and recruits four players ? a pool
shark, a phony preacher, an ex-convict and a girl.
The fifth man is to be added after David gets to
Nevada. The pickings at Cadwallader are pretty
slim, though, and David must settle for a musclebound
freshman who went to school to play football
but forgot to ask if Cadwallader had a team.
Don't let this unlikely line-up fool you into thinking

that Fast Break is just another rip-off of The Bad
News Bears, though; for unlike the Bears, the
Cadwallader basketball team beats its first opponent
by 40 points and doesn't lose a game all season.
They're so invincible through the first part of the film
that you know Nevada State doesn't stand a chance
either. If Cadwallader lost just one game, a little
suspense could have been generated around the
climactic confrontation, thus making the film a great
deal better than it is. i
Fast Break could also be a great deal funnier than
it is. Most of the film is genuinely amusing, but
there's not really a single funny line anywhere in it.
Almost every laugh stems from the "Swish" *
character, a sure-shot who everyone thinks to be a
flaming homosexual but who is really just a girl with
her bosoms tied down. Mavis Washington is excellent
in the role, having a face that is just androgynous *
enough to let her get away with it.
The performances of the remaining team members
(Harold Sylvester, Michael Warren, Bernard King
and Reb Brown) are also first rate, and Kaplan is
also very good, though his character bears a striking
resemblance to the one he portrays every week in
Welcome Back, Hotter.
Fast Break isn't the best movie in town (thank
God!), but it's a nice way to waste time on a boring
afternoon.
