Well, well, well. Chinese premier
Teng Hsiao-ping is now Chinese
vice premier Deng Xiaoping and
the American media are more
confused than ever.
Since diplomatic recognition of
mainland China early this year,
the problem of phonetically
translating Chinese into English
has intensified. And the resulting
cacophony of mispronunciation
has been a source of countless
headaches to broadcasters
everywhere.
The Chinese have tried to help.
They have released a phonetic
guide to help Westerners spell
names for easy and correct
pronunciation, out tneir recomStudent

phoneticism but stopped at her
first name. The Bee Gees exhibited
much forethought in selecting their
name, and John Wayne's is almost
above reproach.
Admittedly, phonetic spelling
would be no panacea. G. William
Miller and Bert Lance cannot
really be helped. Jerry Brown will
pronounce his name whichever
manner California voters prefer.
And Henry Kissinger will
forever be Henwy Kissinjuw to
Babwuh Walters. But Amerikans,
fonetic speling is the leest we can
do for our Chinese frendz.
Take Zbigniew Brzezinski, for
example. Please.

it past the ticket booth you have to
be seventeen or older, look
seventeen or older, or have a
parent or guardian or reasonable
facsimile accompany you. The
only thing is that you have to pay
adult prices even though you
classed as a child. Somewhere all
of this doesn't seem to hook up
straight. The only theatres that
charge fairly are the triple no no
movie houses where children
aren't allowed in at all. So ABC and
Irvin Fuller theaters I guess it's
either get it straight or start
showing those skin flicks.
There is an alternate solution to
those who wish to view the silver
screen. Try the Russell House
theater (How can you lose for a
buck?) or ask your date if she's
