A RESIDENT of Sullivan's
Island, S.C., Fetter said he ran
for Homecoming queen, in
part, to complete a course
requirement on the sociology
of sex roles.
"But that was really
secondary," he said in a
telephone interview. "The
main reason was to point out
the absurdity of a situation

physical and verbal action
against me."

threatening telephone calls,
endured snickers and insults
and had to walk past opposition
wall posters questioning his
masculinity.
Fetter said his detractors
"were about evenly split
between the independents and
the fraternities." But he
earned enough votes from the
college's 6,500 students to
move through the semifinals
and into the finals, where he
outpolled five women.
"A big part of my support
came from the freshmen
women's dorm," he said.
"The main elements of the

Fetter, a mechanical

he planned to enroll in a naval

Pensacola, Fla., following
graduation in March.
"it may be a little weird

time I have to ask my CO for
time off so I can go crown the
next Homecoming queen." ,
