Tom Owens, who played his
college ball at USC. is now a
starter for the Portland Trail
Blazers of the National Basketball
Association. As an Ail-American
center for the Gamecocks in 19691970,
he led his team to a 25-3
season. Monday night he returned
to Columbia to watch his former
team in action.
However, instead of seeing USC
play before a screaming full house
against a powerful opponent, he
witnessed a contest against the

State in front of a gathering of 5,467
people. It must have seemed
unusual for the 6-10 alumnus.
Even more unusual must have
been the final score ? 72-68 ? in
favor of the visitors. The
Gamecocks could have used big
Tom and his 16-points-a-game
career scoring average.
CAROLINA FELL behind early
and stayed behind. Only once did
the Gamecocks get the lead, at 4039
with 2:29 gone in the second half.
But the lead lasted less than a

According to coach Frank
McGuire, the key to the game was
the physical strength and intimidation
of East Tennessee

Despite their physical play, the
visitors were called for fouls five
fewer times than the Gamecocks.
In the second half, USC was called
for 17 fouls, compared to seven for
the Bucs.

there, as far as I'm concerned," an
