Size no for goa' By Brett Friedlander Sports Editor ATLANTA ? The key to building a VY11U11115 nwivcjr icani tc> a strung defense, and the backbone of that defense is a dependable goaltender. So when the New York Islanders began operation in 1972, they naturally looked for a player to fit such a description. That player turned out to be Glenn "Chico" Resch. At 5-9, 165-pounds, Resch does not look like the kind of person that can turn around a National Hockey League, NHL, franchise, but his quickness, leadership and his uncanny knack of stopping pucks has helped him to do just that. "My size could be a slight disadvantage," he said. "But when you play on a team like the Islanders, it doesn't hurt that much. There aren't many rebounds, so all that's left for me to do is play the angles and work on the basics." DESPITE HIS lack of size for an NHL goalie (Resch said the ideal net minder would be about 6-1, 19C pounds) he is among the league's leaders in goals against average Through his first 19 games of the season, "Chico" has allowed onl> 2.70 goals a game and over the same period he was beaten onl> once. "Sure I wish I had a few more inches," he explained. "I was concerned about my size when ] first came up, but it hasn't hurl me. That's the nice thing about hockey, you don't have to be a monster to play. That's unusual for a contact sport; it doesn'l discriminate against smal! players." However, being small was one ol the factors that led to Resch becoming a goaltender in the firsi place. Growing up in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, with a lot ol youngsters who were bigger thar he was, "Chico" was probablj forced to mind the nets becausc nobody else wanted to. "I started playing when I was four, and I didn't think aboui becoming a goalie.
