USC roui LWItC 111 V By Brett Friedlander A??l(t?nt Sport* Kdltoc CHARLESTON ? USC traveled to Charleston this past weekend for the first time in 22 years to participate in the Citadel Doubleheader against Biscayne College-and Fredonia State. While the competition was not the best in the world, coach Frank McGuire's Gamecocks did concentrate enough to beat both outmanned opponents. USC defeated the Bobcats from Miami, Fla., 77-54 on Friday and then downed the small division III Blue Devils from New York 79-52 Saturday night. "I'm very satisfied," the USC coach said after his team's second victory in as many nights. "These fellows want to win, and these games really were tough ones. We were well scouted, and it was our first experience away from home this year, so I'm pretty happy." THE OPENING game of the weekend, against Biscayne, featured a reunion for McGuire. Ken Stibler, the coach of the small Augustinian school was his first assistant coach at Carolina. Stibler's Bobcats have compiled an impressive small-college record over the past 10 years and took the University of Tennessee down to the wire a WM>k Affn hrf?fr?r#? Incina to the Volunteers by four points. Obviously, they were overmatched against the Gamecocks. Although the Bobcats jumped quickly into the lead at 4-0, the Gamecocks used their superior size and talent to build a comfortable 29-12 lead halfway through the first period. Although Carolina looked as though they were about to blow Biscayne right out of the ancient McAlister Field House, the game Thomas. in intra-i By Mike Chibbaro Gamecock StaN Writer USC track coach Charlie Strong, unvieled his 1979 track team in an intra-squad meet held at the Weems-Baskin Track earlier this month The meet featured several outstanding individual performances George Thomas, owner of three school records, captured first place in the 200-meter and 100meter dashes He also finished first in the long jump competition. Another dual winner was Jerome Williams who finished first in the J 1 nneiy win; ^harlestor visitors made a surge to pull within 20 points at 36-26. But Zam Fredrick and Mike Doyle scored three unanswered baskets in the final minute of the half to give USC a 14 point cushion. "OUR TRANSITION was bad during the first few minutes," said USC point guard Kenny Reynolds. "I felt like if we .could slow it up and play at one pace which we are all used to, the offense would be easier to run, and it was." The Gamecocks used their strong frontcourt in the second half to build up a 23-point lead with 11:39 remaining. Newcomers Cedrick Hordges and Tom Wimbush scored 10 points over the period as the Gamecocks outscored Biscayne 17-8. The last two points of that streak were scored by Bobcat freshman Arnie Montgomery. The 6-6 forward, who scored nine points for his team, rebounded a missed Rich Wejnert free throw and shot the ball back into the wrong basket to score for Carolina much to the delight of the 3,700 paying spectators. Hordges finished as USC's high scorer with 22 points, while Wimbush contributed 14. WHEN ASKED after the flame if he had ever seen a man score at his own basket before, McGuire said, "I've never had that good fortune before." Against Fredonia State, Carolina played a similar game to their previous one. Carolina used a tight, zone defense and a deliberate offense to keep the score down Dalton si squad trcit ^ fcpija & Strong r ,wB i w .
