has received a seond $500,000
grant to continue attracting

The announcement of the grant
was made locally this past week by
J.D. Waugh, dean of the USC
College of Engineering and consortium
member. The grant was
presented by the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation.
The foundation, which is backed
by General Motors Corp., in-,
troduced the program two years
ago to make minorities, especially
blacks, more aware of the
engineering profession, Waugh
said. Funding has come to the
foundation in two half-million
dollar grants at two-year intervals.
WAUGH SAID USC receives no
certain amount of the grant. The
money is pooled by the consortium
and is available to universities
represented upon request. USC and
Georgia Tech are the main users of
the money to promote high school
awareness of the engineering
program, he said.
In South Carolina, 15 school
districts are involved in the
awareness program, but with
additional money, 10 more districts
