USC has been selected as
headquarters for the International
Studies Association, ISA, for the
next six years, President James B.
Holderman announced in a press
conference Wednesday.
The ISA is the "cream of the
crop" of international scholars
throughout the world, Holderman
said. The association is the
representative professional society
of around 3,000 intellectuals,
government officials and private
sector practitioners in industry,
commerce and agriculture from
more than 50 countries.
Dr. James A. Kuhlman, chairman
of the USC department of
Government and International
Studies will become executive
director of the ISA during its
establishment at USC. The ISA will
be located in the GINT department
in Gambrell Hall, according to
Kuhlman.
KUHLMAN SAID the selection of
USC as headquarters for the
association is recognition of the
prominence of the study and
research in international relations
on the Columbia campus.
"It (ISA) will channel a great
deal of international relations'
understanding through Columbia/'
Kuhlman said. "The ISA can be a
major proponent in calling outside
attention to South Carolina and at
the same time increase the
awareness of South Carolinians to
developments elsewhere in the
WU1 1U.
The ISA chose Columbia as its
headquarters after consideration
of South Carolina's high ranking in
foreign investments and the
development of USC as a public
service institution under President
Holderman, according to "
Kuhlman.
THE HONOR of being chosen by
ISA was "well won" by the GINT
department, Holderman said.
