A1 McGuire coined the term. "Cupcake." As in,
"South Carolina didn't play many cupcakes last
season."
What the former Marquette basketball coach
meant was that the Gamecocks had a killer schedule
this past year.* Few easy teams, or cupcakes, were
spaced between national powerhouses Notre Dame,
Kentucky, Alabama, Marquette, etc., etc.
This past year's 16-12 National Invitational
Tournament season was a disaster in terms of
scheduling, so much that Frank McGuire said it was
his best year coaching. And that's saying a lot,
considering the Hall of Fame member owns two
national championships and a whole string of 20-win
seasons.
BUT THIS past season is neither here nor there.
Carolina fans are hungry for a big-time winner that
can return the program to national prominence. This
year.
Yet, this year is a little different. Carolina has
enough "cupcakes to fill a bakerv: Fredonin StatP
Harvard, Wheeling, Maine, Baptist, Western
Carolina, etc., etc.
But between those games is what should make this
year's basketball season interesting: road games at
Minnesota, Notre Dame, Syracuse (at Madison
Square Garden), Clemson and Marquette, and a
home game on national television with Kentucky, the
defending national champs.
Yet, even with a road schedule that is relatively
demanding> this season should be successful for
McGuire, who will open his 15th year as USC's head
basketball coach next Monday at home against
Hofstra.
First of all, scheduling will be a major fac tor in the
success of the Gamecocks. As said before, Carolina
will face several weak teams at home. That's nothing
new. What is new is that there are no extended road
trips. The Gamecocks will have to play no more than
one team at a time when they travel. That will help.
anuihgk plus for the Gamecocks is size. With
the addition of 6-8 Auburn transfer Cedric Hordges, 610
Furman transfer Jim Strickland (eligible next
semester) and Anderson Junior College transfer
Tommy Wimbush, Carolina should be able to play the
boards with any team it faces.
In Saturday night's pre-season scrimmage, Hordges
and Wimbush dominated play from underneath

the physical abuse suffered by front court players.
Because Hordges looks as if he may develop into
the center USC has needed so desperately for the past
two years, Jim Graziano can now play forward, the
position he seems to be most comfortable with.
Facing the basket against the second team in the
scrimmage, Graziano scored 22 points in the first
half, most of which came on offensive rebounds and
sweeping sky hooks. Maybe this is the year Graz will
reach the potential he has been billed as having since
being named to Sport magazine's "Dream Five" as a
high schooler. The change should do him good.
RICH WEJNERT also looked promising in the preseason
scrimmage. The 6-7 sophomore will start
along with Graziano in the front court. With a front
line between 6-7 and 6-8 (and 6-10 when Strickland
becomes eligible), there are not many teams that will
able to play man-to-man defense with the
Gamecocks.
If Graz, Hordges, Wejnert, Wimbush or Strickland
tire, there is 6-8 Mark Connaughton and 6-7 Steve

nariy 10 provide depth from the bench. USC should be
able to wear some teams down with brute strength.
The point guard position may be questionable. The
graduation of quarterback Jackie Gilloon hurt in
terms of leadership. Kenny Reynolds, 6-2, will start
as the point man this year. He played enough this past
year to show he can handle the ball. His deliberate,
team-oriented style of play and cool head are what
the Gamecocks need to complement McGuire's game
plan.
EVERYONE FOLLOWING Gamecock basketball
knows what Mike Doyle can do. The 6-4 guard for
from the Bronx used the scrimmage Saturday to
show off his talents. Twisting, driving and shooting
from the peremiter, Doyle scored 27 points.
This past season, Carolina had to resort to a threeguard,
open-center offense because of a severe lack
of size.
Even though it looks doubtful the Gamecocks will
use that same type of offense much this year, Zam
Fredrick, a sophomore, has all the talent needed to
step in.
A 20-win season is a better than average possibility
for the Gamecocks. And With teams such as Notre
Dame and Kentucky on the schedule to impress the
selection committee, an NCAA bid doesn't look impossible.
