Maureen Ahern is one of I

Thanks to the efforts of former
USC softball ' coach, Molly ,
McGuire, Ahem turned down a full ?
scholarship to Arizona State and .
came to Carolina on a softball
scholarship instead.
"Molly took a lot of interest in
me," Ahem explained. "She used
to call me every night. It made me
feel like they really wanted me."
Her avid interest in sports is due, /
in part, to her father who steered
her toward athletics. "He saw it
growing in me; I didn't see it,"
Ahem said. "He had a lot of influence
on me."
Her favorite sport is softball with
volleyball and snow skiing running

For the past eight years Ahem
has been involved in organized
softball. During her sophomore
year in high school she was picked
to try out for the Amateur Softball
Association, ASA. "I used to dream
about making the team ; then I
made it/' Ahem said.
Not only did she make the ASA's
North Tomawanea Shamrocks but
in 1976 and 1978 she made the All

Ahem said it is important to set
winning goals, but you must learn
to be a good loser too. "Winning's
great, but you learn from your
losses," she said. "I set my own
individual goals; like someday I'd
like to be an All-America in
college.
After graduation Ahem plans to
pursue a coaching job at the
elementary or high school level.
