The new Telecenter, 10 long-distance telephone lines located in the
LaFaye House on College Street, is being used by the Student Alumni
Association, SAA, and the Office of Admissions to contact incoming
freshmen and USC alumni.
The SAA began operating the Telecenter this past Wednesday night
with a workshop session to instruct members on use of the facilities,
according to Mike Nunn, graduate advisor. The Office of Admissions

WEDNESDAY AND Thursday nights the SAA members will use the
center to contact USC alumni. "We call alumni all over the country who
are not, for some reason or another, members of the Alumni
Association/' Nunn said. SAA members are responsible for seeing that
the 10 phones are manned each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
night.
High school seniors who have already been accepted to USC are also
contacted by those using the Telecenter. "We call freshmen all over the
state to ask them if they have any questions or problems that we can

they also informed the high school seniors of South Carolina College, a
new development in the Honors program this year.
The SAA members solicit Alumni Association membership from the
alumni they call. The people manning the phones do not have a standard
pitch, Nunn said. "We encourage them to be themselves/' he said. "It's
hard for the alumni to turn down a student." Nunn said that they get
about 25 "yes" responses from the alumni, about 15 percent of all the
calls they make.

association are $10 for single members and $15 for married couples.
Association members receive the association publication, Carolina
Alumni Quarterly, and they have full use of Thomas Cooper library and
limited use of the Sol Blatt Physical Education Center.
National life insurance and low-cost tours are offered to members of
the association, and they may use the Alumni House, formerly the
University House, for parties. The Alumni Association works closely
with class reunions.
Since the university took over the Alumni Association's operating and
salary expenses this year, all of the $10 and $15 memberships go into the

so that the circuit alumni members have tfee most scholarships
