Bell Camp has begun a new
program this year called "ex
Iicuiiiciiuti euucauon, a concept
based on the theory that you learn
more by participating in
something than by studying it.
"I have been trying to get this
program off the board for three
years," said Phil Lownes, director
of Bell Camp, "and finally got
permission this year."
"THIS IS not only informative
but interesting and exciting. We
have a variety of beginner's

special course we're trying to get is
hand-gliding. Next fall we'll start
advanced courses plus beginning
ones."

Other courses planned for the
spring program include campfire
cooking, horseback riding, rock
climbing, caving, bicycling, quiet
water canoeing, snow-skiing, first
aid and CPR (cardiac pulmonary
resuscitation), wild life and
natural photography. These last
from two hours to a week, and two
courses will be added each
semester.
Bell Camp is a 215-acre facility
owned by USC and located 14 miles
northeast of campus off 1-20 near
the Wildewood Country Club. It
consists of a lodge containing a
main room, a lounge and a kitchen
with a stove and refrigerator.
THE LODGE can accommodate
up to 200 at a sit-down dinner and
500 at a dance. The picnic shelter
can hold 70 people.

"This past spring and summer
we finished the new concession
stand," Lownes said. "It now
blends in with the design, by architect
William Kuric, of the lodge
and bathhouse."
"I think we have a good facility
which members of Bell Camp can
rent. Our first and primary
member is the USC student whose
activity fee pays the membership."

"WE HOPE to get students interested
in the camp and outdoors,"
Lownes said. "USC has a
strong membership in outdoor
clubs which should help us. I think
we can reach our goal of having the
best college program within the
next two years."
