There can be no denying that the sole purpose of
?tj Jle3e football is to make money.
/ No other major university exemplifies this fact
lore than USC does. With a stadium that officially
eats 54,406 people (somehow 56,514 were crammed
11%i for Saturday's game) and an active booster club, it
# is no wonder that Carolina's athletic department
/ ' grosses almost $3 million a year.
It stands to reason then, that the athletic department
can afford to allocate enough tickets to go
around. This however, is not the case.
Wednesday around 2:30p.m., the last student ticket
was given out. A long line of people still remained
when the supply was exhausted. Many irate students
were then forced to listen to the game on the radio
f' and wonder just where their student activities fee had
gone.
Included in the tuition for each USC student is a
$86.50 activity fee. This money goes for various
services such as student Health Center charges and
athletic tickets.
Since all 15,000 full-time students enrolled at the
Columbia campus are required to pay this fee, it
would figure that enough tickets would be alloted for
them. Once again, this is not true.
Only 11,000 tickets are available to USC students for
each game. The other 44,000 go to Gamecock club
members, season ticket holders, opposing teams,
faculty and staff members and the general public.
There is a serious problem concerning priorities
within the USC athletic department. Their first
concern should be the students, but it is not.
After all, why give away tickets when you can sell
them for eight dollars each. Isn't that the American
way of doing things?
And what about those unfortunate souls who were
left out in the cold for Saturday's game. Since the
game was already a sellout, there is no way for these

people to attend the game. Still, the portion of the
activity fee designated for athletics which has
already been paid by these students, goes into USC's
bank account.
This is not fair. The people who had the last ticket
pick-up (and were left in line) and those who had .
classes during their designated pick-up times should
have the opportunity to get a ticket. Since they did not
get one, a refund from their activity fee would seem
in order.
There seem to be only two solutions to this
problem. Either allot more football tickets for
students (after all, if they are not all given out they
can still be sold to the general public), or rearrange
the ticket pick-up, student activity fee process.
For example, at Louisiana State University, LSU,
and the University of North Carolina, UNC, a more
workable system is used.
Students who wish to attend sporting events at the
two schools pay an athletic fee separate from their
tuition at the beginning of the year ($18 a semester at
UNC). When this fee is paid, a validation sticker is
placed on the student's ID card.
Once at the game, the student shows his card at the
gate and is admitted to the game. General admission
seating is provided.
With this kind of system, no student can be turned
away from the game. Also, any student who does not
want to 0O to the ifairiM in nnt fr* now
athletic fee.
A workable system such as this would be simple to
use here at USC. It is doubtful, however, that the
athletic depoartment would be willing to change a
policy to favor their own student body.
The whole situation was summed up best by Mike
Chambers, a student who failed to receive a ticket.
''They have such a flippant attitude about the
students that they almost discourage you from going
out to support the team," he said.
