After the 1977 crisis, which closed the university for two weeks in February, university officials decided to make several changes to avoid another crisis. THE FIRST change was in the school calendar, Brunton said. Officials decided to delay the opening of the 1978 spring semester until the end of January to conserve fuel. However, "We determined the long semester break ?? " Konouoo if HiahirhfiH (ho aht/lptit't was nut ucou auic, uwuuuv ?. ?ua??u <?? ? ??- ? study habits and created several personal problems, he said. Also, because the air conditioning costs are higher than heating costs, the university found it was actually spending more money on energy. Therefore, the opening date was returned to early January for the 1979 spring semester, Brunton said. When the Federal Power Commission asked that the university's gas supply be cut off, it was forced to convert to oil, he said. Because USC only had a one-day storage capacity for oil and could not get a daily supply of the fuel, the school was forced to close temporarily. After the closing, an "oil farm" was constructed to prevent this situation from reoccurring, Brunton said. The farm can hold 300,000 gallons of oil, he said, which is enoug to heat USC for 30 days. USC PREFERS to use natural gas because it is cheaper and cleaner, Brunton said. Therefore, oil is - - - - * i used in only Uie university-ownea nouses on and Pendleton Streets, he said. USC officials also adopted energy conservation measures. On weekdays after 5 p.m. and on weekends, the heating and cooling system in the buildings are cut off, " Brunton said. WHEN THE buildings are in use, Brunton urges that the temperature be set at 68 during the winter, and 76 in the summer. s his sole audience ? until a prying otographer brought him back to [j ility. TTOr1 1 a va;\jl uy u ovj Changing the structures of several buildings has also reduced energy usage, Brunton said. For example, 50 percent of the windows in Gambrell Hall have been bricked up on the inside. This change has reduced the energy usage in the building by about 10 percent, he said. ANOTHER ADVANTAGE of Gambrell is ite heating and cooling system, he said. This system can be set at three different cycles: heating, cooling and economy. The latter allows the system only to circulate air inctnnH rtf hpntinff nr rnnlinff it Ihprpfnrp rpHurinff energy usage. The Gambrell system is different from the Business Administration building's system, which must run on either a heating or cooling cycle, Brunton said. All these changes have reduced USC's fuel usage by more than 25 percent. From July 1, 1977 to June 30, 1978, USC reduced its fuel bill from an expected $4 million to $3 million, Brunton said. Future plans include improving the energy efficiency of all the buildings on campus. ~ " b m iaiii Miliar 1411 Garvais St. ' ] New ~ Richland Mall | jlltf 11-2:15 A4:45-?:00 I _ B I llil15 4 4:00#:00 1 Sfl Special H oiled Liver (ft 7 f\qm vegetables ^ j hhhh Sept. 25 - Oct. i hshhhhbhh ^ Free Delivery of Best Pizza in South Carolina...
