should not stay in that condition
more than a week, said William A.
Heddy, USC Safety and Compliance
officer.
Heddy said each fire extinguisher
is checked every
Monday for an intact pin and
proper pressure level. The extinguishers
are inspected by
Heddy, a fire technician, an industrial
hygienist and a health
physicist, each taking a different
section of the campus.
According to directions on the
fire extinguishers, complete inspections
should be made every six
months. However, Heddy said this
contradicts the National Fire
Protection code which states that a
complete inspection be given only
once a year.
A CHECK of fire extinguishers
across campus found that none had

January of this year. "That's a
good date," said Heddy. "We try to
get around to every fire extinguisher
at least once a year."
The difference between these
inspections Mid the checks every
Monday is that during inspections
the extinguishers are taken down
and shaken to keep the active
particles from settling to the
bottom, and each is checked for
leakage, Heddy said. The Monday
checks are not written on the inspection
card attached to the extinguisher.
Heddy said every five years the
extinguishers are pumped with

"We have very little trouble with
leakage," Heddy said. "Actually
these extinguishers could last

Maxcy had four that were low. One
of those in Maxcy had just been
recharged in May. The dormitory's
main desk did not know of any
extinguisher being used recently.
Heddy said most of the problems
with extinguishers are the result of
tampering, with an average of one
or two extinguishers discharged
per week.

Blood drive, free concert
planned for Wednesday
By Lisa Frucht J
Gamecock Staff WrCtr
Omega Psi Phi fraternity, in conjunction with the American
National Red Cross, will sponsor the Charles Drew Memorial
Blood Drive on Wednesday, Sept. 20.
Charles Drew was an early member of the fraternity. In 1940,
he discovered a technique for the long term storage of blood
plasma. Prior to that time, major surgery was difficult to perform
because plasma spoiled in a matter of hours. Ironically,
Drew died ten years later in a car accident, from the loss of blood.
THIS PAST week the fraternity signed up 150-200 people, who
pledged to give blood, but it is not necessary to have signed up to
donate blood. The drive will be held in room 202 and 203 nf th*?
