Weekend M Bv David Baker Ocmccock Film Critic American Graffiti: The movie that launched the careers of Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams, Paul LeMat, Candy Clark, Kathleen Quinlan, Mackenzie Phillips, Suzanne Somers and George Lucas is back, this time in Dolby sound. (PG) Jefferson Square The Bad News Bears Go to Japan: Tony Curtis leads those foul-mouthed munchkins across the Pacific Ocean to the World Championship. Better than "The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training," but that's not saying much. (PG) Columbia Mall and Bush River Mall The Betsy: Even Laurence Olivier can't keep this "daring expose about the automobile industry" from running out of gas. (R) Columbia Mall Corvette Summer: Mark Hamill and Annie Potts in a hilarious romp through the streets and hotels of Las vegas, where Hamffl's stolen Corvette was spotted. The script, by Hal Barwood and Matthew Robbins, evokes a stream of laughter about every five minutes, and the film's stuntwork is perfection. (PG) Twilight Drive-In. Eyes of Laura Mars: Faye Dunaway stars in this stylish and absorbing thriller from the producer of "A Star Is Born/' Jon Peters. The film's theme song, "Prisoner," sung by Barbra Streisand, is a sure Ofwar nnminpp ?- ?\??/ *?iviwiiu m<ui Foul Play: As if Goldie Hawn alone wouldn't be enough to make this one a hit, the producers also threw in one of the most dazzling car chase sequences ever filmed. Chevy Chase co-stars as a bumbling detective. (PG) Columbia Mall and Bush River Mall Grease: John Travolta proves that "Saturday Night Fever" was no fluke, and Olivia Newton-John is even better than he is. Ranks with "Foul Play" and "Heaven Can Wait" as one of the year's most entertaining pictures. (PG) Bush River Mall The Greatest: Nothing more than a two-hour ego trip for Muhammed Ali. A more appropriate title would have been "The Worst." (PG) Plaza III Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: Peter Frampton's idea of acting is to roll his eyes back into his head, which is better than Sandy Farina's idea of singing. If this fiasco doesn't kill the Bee Gees, nothing ever will. (PG). Columbia Mall Heaven Can Wait: Warren Beatty and Julie Christie, together for the umpteenth time, make for I Elegant Dini low country okra vegetable s mushrooms sauteed in pure I ] juicy New York Strip steak, a view of the city at night?ai and more?Friday evenings. 1^ C J tu? nr~ JL UC X 1/jL/ o/ Carotin Make sure you have a plac I Top. 18th floor' of Caps torn I Call 777-8198fo7 reserva\ ????? ovie Guide screen magic, the likes of which we haven't seen since Streisand cast her spell over Kristofferson in "A Star Is Born." (PG) Gamecock and Spring Valley Hooper.: Totally inferior to "Smokey & the Bandit/' the previous Burt Reynolds-Sally Field-Hal Needham collaboration, but it still has some nice moments (most of them Field's). (PG) Spring Valley and Bush River Mall House Calls: Howard Zieff's medicinal comedy features a trite script, but good acting from Walter Matthau, Glenda Jackson and Art Carney. (PG) Columbia East Inserts: A little known, but critically praised film about the making of pornography in the 1920s. Richard Dreyfuss and Jessica Harper head an excellent cast that also features Veronica Cartwright, who will be seen next month in Terrence Malick's eagerly anticipated "Days of Heaven." (X) Fox It's Alive, 2: These murderous babies are back for mnrA floak I- 1 ' " AitVA V AAVOll i^aoiui^. uwu nun ur-nouse iun xi you can forget the inadequacies of the plot. (R) Palmetto National Lampoon's Animal House: Belushi, Matheson and company in one of the year's funniest films. The horse's heart attack is an inspired stroke of absurdity that will probably go down in history. (R) Dutch Square and Gamecock Revenge of the Pink Panther: The fifth installment of the Inspector Clouseau saga, wherein Peter Sellers fumbles his way to fame and fortune, is wildly erratic but better than "The Pink Panther Strikes Again." (PG) Spring Valley The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Now entering its fifth month in Columbia, "Rocky Horror" is the best transvestite musical ever made. (R) Bush River Mall ? Midnight Movie Slithis: A monster movie from the Godzilla school of horror. This one has a novel twist in that the creature was born from sewage. (PG) Carolina Thank God It's Friday: The movie debut of Donna Summer is the one and only reason for seeina this "Saturday Night Fever" rip-off. The set lookslnore like a menagerie than a disco, and most of the good music is used for underscoring. (PG) Plaza III Who'll Stop the Rain (Dog Soldiers): Karel Reisz directed this bland screen version of the best-selling novel by Robert Stone. Stellar performances from Nick Nolte and Tuesday Weld make it worth seeing. Rv David Rolror Oam*cocfc Film Critic The advertising campaign for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" states that it is the only film in the past 45 years to win all the major Academy Awards. What the campaign neglects to mention is that "Cuckoo's Nest's" winning those awards is Oscar's biggest mistake in those 45 years. Whatever caused the Academy to bestow its honors on such an (undeserving picture is beyond the realm of comprehension. "Dog Day Afternoon," one of the W75 also-rans, is by far a better picture, and A1 Pacino's performance in it totally eclipses Jack Nicholson's erratic portrayal of "Cuckoo's Nest's" resident booh AnH I Louise Fletcher's was the best performance of the five Best Actress nominees, both Julie Christie and Goldie Hawn were better in the much-neglected "Shampoo." In short, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is a sham. It's a fluke ! that raked in over $50 million because of the Academy's stupidity. The story, or what passes for one, is about convict R. P. MacMurphy's rocky road to mental health. After several futile sessions with the prison psychiatrist, MacMurphy is transferred to an institution where he encounters the dictatorial Nurse Ratched and the , conflicts begin. MacMurphy wants to watch the World Series, but Nurse Ratched nixes television during working hours Nnrso t?? w .mtvtivu LI IVO LU RCC|I the other inmates calm, but MacMurphy does everything in his power to get them excited. The list of their altercations goes on and on. The film's script loads up sympathy for MacMurphy and portrays Nurse Ratched as Hitler in skirts. After about an hour of such manipulation, the audience realizes that Nurse Ratched is really in the right and so, when MacMurphy is electrically silenced, it's more of a relief than an outrage. The worst thing about "Cuckoo's Nest," however, is the feeling of depression it gives the viewer. When you can go see such uplifting movies as "Grease," and "Heaven Can Wait," it's a shame to spend your money on such a downbeat project as "Cuckoo's Nest." mmm i nam m ^ PEEU... | ?Ki p - v ^ BBMMWIIIHimHIWHMMHMBBMB?WrUIIIWI IBfiMMMggM?BBMPMWHHII1IIH llllllllllUBMK laway Ski Shop Jfkk I ^nn!nr? ? mplete Ski Shop" i SKI SALE ?adaway Ski Shop^^MT ^ ~~~ -- nter ~ ~ 20th for The Zassoff Boys 4til8p.m. i to some great music and vantage of some super buys GROUP NORDICA & I LARGE GROUP JARMONT SKI BOOTS DOWN SKI PARKAS VJ off $19" SUPER PRE SEASON SPECIAL $3750 I BUMPER STICKERS!
