Almost eight months after being released by USC,
Dick Little, former alumni relations director, has
reached a settlement with the administration.
A $28,000 settlement was negotiated Aug. 24, the
same day the state Budget ana Control Board ruled
the school had "wrongfully terminated" Little and
must reinstate him.
THE UNIVERSITY dismissed Little after his
position was eliminated because of a restructuring of
the alumni affairs office staff. Harold Hagan was
named by President James B. Holderman to head the
revamped operation.
Timothy Quinn of the Legal Affairs and Legislation
office said the reorganization was decided after an
administrative evaluation of the alumni office. "This
was then presented to the Alumni Council which
concurred without, a dissenting vote," Quinn said.

a chance to improve. This procedure was not followed
in the Little case, according to the board.
If reinstated, Little could collect back pay for the
time he was not working, but he said he is not sure
whether be will return, now that a financial settlement
has been reached.
QUINN SAID the $28,000 figure was reached after
the July hearing and negotiations between the two
sides' attorneys. "These negotiations resulted in an
agreement whereby the university was to pay to
Little his back pay plus one year's salary and he, in
turn, would agree to drop all grievances or causes of
action against the university," Quinn said. "Since

Little, who was director of alumni relations for 11
years, said he does not want to take action that would
"hurt my university." Little met with Holderman
after the settlement and said they "left on friendly
terms."
Little's attorney, Travid Medlock, told the
Columbia Record that he and his client "came out of
this with renewed appreciation for the state
grievance committee. They and the Budget and
Control Board called it like it was." This came after
