Twenty-one year old Bob Horner 1
of the Atlanta Braves is living j
every young man's dream. '
After playing college baseball t
for three years at Arizona State
University, he was selected first in
this summer's free agent draft. I
(Instead of going to the minor ]
leagues to develop as the Braves wanted
him to, Horner stepped <
right in to play third base in the ]
National League. i
The big, blond infielder is i
playing remarkably well at third i
base for the Braves. Since he 1
joined in July, he has hit 16 t
homeruns and driven in 50 runs. In I
just a short time he has emerged as
I the leading candidate for rookie of
the year honors.
While Horner expected to do
well, his stunning success has
surprised even himself. Upon his
signing with the Braves, he indicated

imself. After his fast start though, c
lorner has set his sights on the j
ookie of the year award. r
"I'D BE A FOOL if I said I didn't
yant it; everybody likes to get \
[wards," Horner said. "I've just t
;ot to do my job with the Braves. (
Cven if I don't win (the award), I'll v
till be satisfied to know I con- I
ributed to the Braves and helped n
Ihe team win." I

Horner, who was the 1978 college
riayer of the yew at ASU, has
found the transition from college
tell to pro ball relatively easy,
rhere have been some problems
Hnitati
"The pitchers are smarter up
tiere in the majors, but they're that
much more superior," he said.
"Hie biggest difference is playing
svery day and going on those long
road trips. You have to cram an
awful lot of living into six months."
Another difficulty for the young
*ookie was learning a new position.
\ second baseman in college,
Hforner was chosen by the Braves
o fill a long-time void at the third
>ase spot.
To assist him in making the
ransition, the Braves hired former
najor league third baseman Clete
3oyer as a coach. His tutelage has
xaidoff, for Horner is playing solid
iefense at the "hot corner."
"I credit a lot of my success to
?lete," Horner explained. "He was
me of the all-time greats at the
>osition and he's been a big help to
ne."
WHILE HORNER has adjusted
veil to his new environment, his
eammates, especially Rod
rilbreath have had to adjust as
veil. A seven-year veteran with the
Jraves, Gilbreath was moved out
f his starting position when
lorner joined the team.

Gilbreath too has handled the
situation wen. "There was no
animosity at all on this team,"
Horner said. "Rod and all the rest
of the players are great guys and
they realize this move will help the A
team win in the long run." \i
Even with his sudden success
and the variety of awards that Bob
Horner has already accumulated,
he still feels that his best moment
in baseball was his team's victory two good pitc
