It will be interesting to see if
Carolina's latest contributions to
the professional basketball draft
are still contributing to the pros <
when the season opens this fall.

N?toy and Jackie Gtiloon, drafted
by the Nuggets, last aepjion's cocaptains
and co-MVP's, are the
latest graduates of the Prank
McGuire School of Basketball to be
drafted by the NBA.
The fact that they enter their
respective rookie camps this
summer fresh out of USC is no
surprise. They follow such
Gamecock standouts as John
Roach, Alex English, Brian
Winters and Tom Owens, just to
name a few.

at all is a surprise. While both
Augustus and Gilloon were instrumental
in Carolina'8 16-12 NIT
season, neither were considered as
outstanding basketball players.
Until this year.
On first glance, neither appear
physically to be "ideal"
professional prospects. Gilloon, at
5-0,160 pounds, may be too small to
compete with the bigger NBA
guards. Golie, likewise, at 6-5, is
'too small" for an NBA forward,!

a swingman.
A SECOND GLANCE at them,
however, penetrates a little deeper
than physical appearance. Both,
stated plain and simple, possess an
inner quality that allows them to
compete with the best. Call it guts,
heart, intestinal fortitude, or
whatever, Gilloon and Augustus
have it.
They had to have it in order to
have survived at Carolina.
Augustus, by his own admission,
was frustrated at the
prospects of returning to USC after
his sophomore year. Recruited out
of Columbia's Keenan High School
as "South Carolina's best prep
basketball player/' Golie was
collecting nothing but splinters and
a lot of time to think.
After a mediocre junior year, he
got his break as a senior. As
college basketball's answer to Paul
Silas, Augustus never stopped

His flair and style captivated his
admirers, bugged his critics and
dismayed the coaching staff.

There was probably no better

So don't be too'terribly surprised
if the two players who weren't
expected to make it in college ball
might end up wearing New Jersey
and Denver uniforms next year.
