RH thefts result

A total of $825 was stolen from Russell House University Union funds
in two thefts in late April.
Jackie Westbury, accountant for the student-funded organization,
said the first robbery involved $618 generated from pinball machines in
the Golden Spur. Westbury said paper currency and a financial sheet
were taken from an unlocked safe in the RH business office.
She said the safe, located on the fourth floor of the Russell House, was
unlocked because of the inconvenience posed by reopening it every time it
was used.
Although the safe remained unlocked when at least one member of the

ouice was present on the floor, Westbury said the door to the room
housing the safe was to be kept locked. But because of renovations being
completed at the time the room was used to conduct interviews and thus
was not always locked, she added.
THE MONEY, which was in a cloth bag, had been counted in
preparation for deposit when a final count by cashier Gail Trebuchon

because each RHUU account is kept separate on paper even though
combined for deposit later, she said.
During an investigation by campus police and SLED another $207 was
noticed missing May 1 from an envelope atop a desk in the business
office, Westbury said. The money was taken in from the movie
"Woodstock," which was presented in late April at RH. The money
included two night deposits.

night's sum was in a cloth money bag while the other was in an envelope.
The two containers were placed in a safe in the USC Travel
Center late Saturday night, and picked up by Trebuchon early the next
Monday morning where they were placed on a desk with the envelope
resting on top of the cloth bag.
Again, the financial sheet for the night was stolen along with the
money, but by checking the previous night's last ticket number along
with the first number on the remaining ticket roll, the total amount stolen
was derived, Westbury said. "The office was covered at all times: it was
not left unattended," she said, adding that again, because of renovation,
the office was overcrowded and subject to increased traffic.
The renovation was designed to increase security after Trebuchon
was confronted by a masked assailant last spring, Westbury said. After
Trebuchon began to scream the masked man retreated as he had come,
by way of the stairs which now remain closed.

said the cost to bring "Woodstock" here was $639.25, and since only
$495.19 was deposited, a loss of about $144 was realized. The additional
$207 would have made it a financial success, she said. "This
money affected us, not greatly, but we could have used it," Laatsch
said.
