Thurmon By JANE SHEALY News Editor Two candidates for the U. S. Senate, both opposed to allocating more of the state budget to higher education, discussed a number of federal and local issues in interviews Friday. Senator Strom Thurmond ate lunch in the Russell House cafeteria and visited The Gamecock and the studios of WUSC. Charles 'Pug' Ravenel was interviewed in his Greenville office by telephone. The text of the interviews follows. THE GAMECOQK: Senator Thurmond, why do you feel that you nave to run again? Do you think your age will affect your campaign? THURMOND: I guess it would be much nicer if I retired and could be with my family more. But with the seniority I have in the Senate and being in such good health, I'd be letting the people down if I Is your weight affecting the way you live your life? My age would and should be a factor if I were in the condition that most people my ace (76) are. I ran two and a half miles this morning and did 20 minutes of calisthenics. I think I am in a position to serve the people more effectively, in terms of health and seniority, than ever before. GAMECOCK: Mr. Ravenel, why are you running for U. S. Senate? RAVENEL: I'm running because I think I'm more qualified to serve in the Senate over the next six years than any other candidate. I think I'm better qualified than anybody running. GAMECOCK: What do you think about the controversial Barnwell plant and the development of alternative power sources? RAVENEL: We should not proceed with the development of nuclear power until we know what to do with the waste products. It supplies more energy (about half of South Carolina's presently). There is no evidence to show that this plant is dangerous. I'm strong for reprocessing nuclear energy.
