Carolina moved one step closer
to a 30-win season Saturday as the
Gamecocks beat Georgia Tech 9-3
at the Roost.
Needing at least 30 wins to
qualify for the Atlantic Regional
tournament before the selection
committee meets in early May, the
Gamecocks, who lost to Clemson
yesterday 11-4, must beat Erskine
Wednesday to reach that mark.
USC's record after the Clemson
defeat stands at 29-13.
Carolina never struggled in their
win over the Yellow Jackets.
Starting pitcher Jeff Twitty and
reliever Mark Kish combined to
give up only nine hits. Twitty gave
up two of the Tech runs, neither of

The game had its other strange
moments, as in the fifth when Tech
catcher Bobby Jackson started an
argument by protesting after he
struck out. Even though Tech had
two runners on base, the Tech
coaches did not call time during
the argument. In the meantime,
Carolina shortstop Greg Jonson
walked over and tagged Tech's
lead runner, Gary Hardie, for the
third out.

CAROLINA HAS proven its r
victory
Carolina scored every inning,
except for the fifth and sixth.
Missing a home run by inches,
John Marquardt doubled and then
was brought home with a single by
Long in the first inning to tie the
game for the first and last time.
Chuck McLean, who was hit by
pitches twice in the game, walked
in the second, stole Second, and
was driven in by Curl for the goahead
run.
THE GAMECOCKS exploded for
four runs in the eighth as they sent
all nine batters to the plate. Jonson,
Marquardt, Rodgers, and
Jamie Chakales all scored as Long
had two RBI's on a bases loaded
single in the inning.
Tech's only earned run came in
the ninth as Mike Macon scored
after he and Davidson had connected
for back-to-back doubles.
The Yellow Jackets had the
defensive play of the game in the
seventh as Davidson made a diving
play in right field robbing Curl of
an extra-base hit.
"It looks better than it did
yesterday," said Raines of
Carolina's chances to get an atlarge
tournament bid. "We can't
worry about an invitation, though.
We've got to win at least 30."
Tech's Gary Hardie cuts
down Jim Curl on a force play
in the eighth. Curl replaced the
injured Wes Westbrook in the
first.
