| The bean bag chair is now the
latest word on birthing stools,
, according to home birth advocate,
i Rick Beattv.
t Beatty was joined in a Health
i Week discussion panel Thursday
"Alternatives in Childbearing," by
Dottie Stone, a certified La Leche
leader; R. N. Jan Tanner; a
Colombia Lamaze instructor; and
Helen Burst, a midwifery advocate
representing the Medical
University at Charleston.
Although Beatty has built a
i birthing school and delivered his
[ own child, he recommends the
j bean bag chair. "You can raise the
woman up or let her down by
exerting pressure on the chair, not
her," he said.
ALL FOUR panelists agreed on a
home-type environment or live-in
hospital situation. Burst, considering
possible complications in
delivery, advised more
professional care.
An instructor of nurse midwifery,
Burst said that under the
care of a midwife, should any
complications arise which would
make natural childbirth unsafe,
the expectant woman is referred to
a regular obstetrician. "We try to
' respect the mother's wishes within
the constraints of what is safe,"
Burst explained.
Burst also cited Bamberg county
infant mortality statistics before
and after the introduction of two
midwives. "In 1975,43 babies out of

has to be unlearned in prepared

she said.
Although Lamaze is not

Stone, a certified La Leche
Leader, advocated a prepared
childbirth so that techniques of La
Leche could be applied minutes
after birth.
LA LECHE literally means "the
milk." It promotes breastfeeding
as a bonding experience for mother
and child as well as a physically
advantageous relationship. "Kor
the baby, breast milk provides
optimum nutrition.For the mother,
it speeds up tightening of stomach
muscles and helps deliver the
placenta, if that has not occurred,"
she said.
Stone added that more
medicated childbirth does not
allow breastfeeding to be as effective
as possible. "The infant's

time some medications have worn
off, the baby may have lost that
sucking response." Stone said that
by this time some of the antibodycontaining
colostrum has
deteriorated.
All panelists agreed that a more
home-like delivery in comfortable
surroundings was conducive to
easier deliveries. Whether in a
maternity facility, hospital, or at
home, the individual wishes of the
mother were emphasized as the
priority of home birth, Lamaze, La
Leche and Midwifery. Beatty said,
"The mother is the center of attention.
She's the show."
