To the Editor:
Periodically, and with amazing frequency, I read
an article in The Gamecock that either irritates,
angers or amuses me to the point that I feel I must
respond with a letter. For a couple of years, I've been
able to control ' these rash impulses, but an
opinionated article in vour Anril fi isum*

"Columbia Police actions offensive" simply begs a
reply. It also raises questions in my mind: Who is
Wayne Brooks anyway, and what is he babbling
about this time?
At the risk of incurring the wrath of several hundred
persons, many of whom are friends of mind, I
hereby publicly admit to being the "complainant"
referred to in the Brooks article ? and I'd like to set
the record straight with a few facts.
On the Saturday night in question, I retired before
midnight with a high fever and a migraine headache.
Realizing that an alley party was in progress, I shut
my window and turned a fan on, for my room
overlooks the alley and outdoor party sounds travel
easily. For two long hours I tried to sleep, as the
party noise accelerated from a rumble to a roar.
When I could stand it no longer, I called campus
police to ask that someone walk over and try to
quieten things down. Being off campus, the party
was not under the jurisdiction of campus police, so

?. ...U.UWO, luui ui live punce cars responded ?
over-responded, perhaps, but with "more than 200
persons" at the party, understandably one car
hesitated to go it alone. Interestingly enough, Mr.
Brooks reports that the police broke up the party ;
Pun Nio, the hostess, stated in another article in the
same issue that the party continued.
Yes, Mr. Brooks, I could have easily called Pun
directly ? she and I are friends and I've been invited
to her parties in the past. With such a large outdoor
party, however, it is doubtful that she could have
done much to quiet the crowd, if I could have reached
her by phone.
After going to the trouble of checking police logs

auu seeing mac a complaint was indeed filed, it
seems ridiculous to me that the writer should then
waste two paragraphs doubting that a complaint was
filed. And the assumption that "almost all (if not
all)" nearby residents are students is erroneous.
Several faculty members, for example, live in the
white apartment building at the top of the alley, next
to Wade Hampton dorm. As for the idea that "the
complainant may not even reside anywhere near the
_ area," that is absurd and a bit far-fetched.

that sentence, Mr. Brooks, and stick it up your nose.
Or do you have absolutely no conception of how much
noise 150 to 200 people can make after three to four
hours of partying? I was disturbed; many of my
residents were disturbed at 2 a.m.; that much noise
made outside in a residential area warrants a
complaint, neighborhood prominence or no neighborhood
prominence.
Had I felt better that night, I may have wheeled
over to the alley party myself (with both legs in
casts, it would have been difficult to walk over.) Had
tnat been the case, I may have also been among
those who were angry when the police arrived ?
assuming, as Mr. Brooks does so well, that someone
else would have complained of the noise. What I
would not have done is let my anger dictate a letter
of protest to The Gamecock which clearly overrode
my objectivity and rationalization, which Mr.
Brooks did with his editorial ? or whatever it was
supposed to be.
