To the Editor:
You might say that this is a
two-element commentary, but
there does exist a common
bond, Monday's issue (April
17) of The Gamecock.
Element number one: I am
very glad to see that 78-yearold
Dora Grey of Cayce is
being ''rescued" by students of
a General Studies sociology
class. It also sends a flow of
emotion throughout my body, a
public relations enhanced flow,
to see that Budweiser of
Columbia, Inc., is so gracious
as to foot an implied large
portion of the total cost of the
renovation project. To look at
the photograph of the two
elderly black persons standing
in the middle of a yard wearing
tee shirts bearing the Bud___?

My other complaint about
this particular photoeraDh is.
"why no outline?" I assume
Grey is the lady in the photo.
But who is this man? She does
live alone, according to the
article. A glance to the left of
this story animates our two
friendly students painting
away to their hearts content.
One of those students is
gripping a bottle of beer in his
hand. One might even assume
it is of the Anheuser-Busrh
label.
There are no excuses for the
countless errors displayed on
your front page. The story is
not of the hard news variety
but more up the human interest
alley and belongs on a
page of not such impact. The

is rare that a staff member and
member of another medium
writes a letter to the editor; it
may even be unacceptable. However,
a recent decline in
news coverage and news
worthiness in the stories
featured in The Gamecock has
led me to this questionable
approach in solving the
problem.
Element number two: a

coverage is a half-page photo
spread, comprised of three
good photographs. So far it
sounds like The Gamecock is

aoing oKay.
Now refer to the front page
story on Dora Grey. Are the
activities of 1,300 students and
their university president
more important than the good
deeds of Budweiser and their
fellow students? I say yes.
When President Holderman
says that USC has suffered "an
absolutely unsubstantiated
inferiority complex," then
makes a commitment,
something rarely heard from
politicians, saying "You (the
Greeks) can be certain that as
long as I'm President,
fraternities and sororities will
get our help," then you better
be damned sure that you have
a more important story appearing
on your front page
than the one on Monday's front
page.
The phrase"anti-Greek" has
been used in the past as a
reason for poor news coverage
of the Greeks, but it is not a
factor in this case. This is a
case of poor management.

Examine these factors: Greek

10 and 11, a Monday and
Tuesday. No story appeared in
the following Thursday's issue
of The Gamecock.
When a group of people, so
large in number, make a step
in unison, it is very I
newsworthy. A newsDaDer
should not neglect its readers if
they are making news. The
problem is indeed a great one.
I, have heard excuses from
every editor involved with any
portion of possible news
coverage of Greek Week. The
entertainment editor says
that he planned a two-page
photo spread, much like the I
one done on RIapW hnf i
states that there wasn't enough
space available and not enough
photographs. The sports editor
claims that the Greek Games
