deniical 10.2 seconds, but then was awarded second
place.
THOMAS DID manage to take second behind
Latany in the 200 meter, but for Carolina, a team that
has relied heavily upon its field performers and only
a few of its runnings, most notably Thomas, the
difference was still too much.
"Losing the 100 and 200 meters which we normally
get, well, that just turned the tide," Strong said.
in spite 01 tne 34 point difference in point totals,
Strong said he felt that a few breaks could have
turned the runaway into a close meet. He cited an
even more frustrating victory at the tape.
Frank Munro ran the 1500 meters in 3 minutes 52.7
seconds~a personal best and identical with two
Bulldog runners. But when the judges made their
decision, Munro had third place and only one point to
show for his effort.
Five points is awarded for any first place finish in
track and field, while second brings three points and
the third place finisher gets one.
"SO THEY got eight points to our one in that 1500
meters instead of five to four, our favor," Strong
reasoned. "A few events can really make a dif

Strong said he was really bothered by the loss of
sprinter Gus Kirkland. "We didn't take Gus along
because of that hamstring injury and that cost us a
first in the high hurdles," he said. "They won it in
14.6 and Gus has run a lot faster than that."
In the field events Lou DeChicchio threw the javelin
200 feet for first place while John Madden took third.
Thomas won the long jump at 24 feet with Rolando
Adams taking second. Ron Sutherland won the discus
throw at 163 feet and Mike Sullivan won the pole vault
at 15 feet 1 inch.
Steve Wilson won the triple jump at 46 feet 10 inches
with Vernon Wilson second and Rolando Adams third.
Steve Wilson also took second in the high jump while
Gary Brown finished third.
ON THE TRACK, Richard Sale ran the 800 meters
in 1 minute 55.1 seconds to win and Halston Taylor
took third. Jim Carey's 14 minute, 50 second running
of the 5000 meters captured first and Max Minter
finished third in the steeplechase. Mark Rohlfing
took second in the intermediate hurdles and third in
low hurdles.

PLAYOFF MANIA has not only
afflicted basketball and hockey but
has the chance to spread to
baseball. There is a distinct
possibility baseball may include

divisions in the next two years.
The only possible settlement to
this complex problem is to make
the playoffs something meaningful
to the participants involved. In
other words, the NBA and the NHL
should only allow teams with the
best eight records to participate in
the playoffs. If a team happens to

win its division then it should be
invited to the playoffs, but that
would be the only exception.
In the final analysis it comes
down to whether the fan and the
people who control the sports
which permit a playoff system
want quality or quantity, it quality
is the desired result then fewer
teams should be permitted to go to
the playoffs. By doing that the
quality of play in the playoffs
would benefit.
YET, IF quantity is desired the
playoffs will not include the best
teams but everyone will be allowed
to participate. Quantity or quality?
It's up to the people who pay for the
tickets to decide what they want in
the long run.
